@Jeremy Vickery If I already have some experience with light and shadow (just black and white), should I take this course or wait for painting light 102?
Kevin Vanderhoof
I would definitely encourage you to take this course. You will learn a ton. I promise you. I can't say enough about Jeremy's teaching methods. By far one of my favorite teachers in any medium.

Having a schedule is going to make you level up way faste, if you are focused on being technically proficient it’s a great idea. There’s potential in your gesture drawings that needs attention. I always recommend the Walt Stanchfeld books drawn to life. There is a ton of information in those two volumes about what a gesture is and how economy of line can get you to an optimal place we’re you don’t need too much detail to convey a clear pose. The second suggestion I’d like to add is to make sure you have a goal in mind, why do you want to study like this? And how long do you think you can manage to work in order to be proficient at what you want to do? Make time for exercise, rest and fun. This mentality of drawing fr the sake of drawing is NOT healthy in the long run.

Thanks for the nice advice! I'm trying to find a balance of drawing/rest-of-life, although it has always been a struggle to get it right. My goal right now is to get to a point where I can draw reliably at a level that is professionally viable. I can at the moment produce things that are portfolio worthy, but it's a hit or miss affair, and I believe my lacking fundamentals are to blame for this. As for long time goals, I would love to make art into a living somehow, but I am not sure in what way yet. About gesture, you are absolutely right about me needing to develop more in that area. I understand the concept of line economy in theory, but more often than not I end up treating gestures as figure drawings in a hurry. I'm always on the lookout for more resources, and the book you suggested looks really interesting.

Howdy, been playing around with charcoal in Procreate. I'm trying to do one every day. Would love to know what you think.

Here’s what I’ve been up to. I’m really loving the charcoal brushes in Procreate.

Hi Jeremy. I'm Doug Dominicali. I'm an 2D artist that love Hearthstone artwork. I draw things but I draw them bad, I want to draw them less bad so I can work with you =D Any feedback on my portfolio/artwork will be immensely appreciated... please don't take easy, I want you to hurt my feelings

You should show me how to draw “bad” if anything this is bad-ass 🤟🏻

Hi! I'm Roberto, I'm 39. Graduated in 2019 in animation and I've been practicing since to become a character designer. I know I started really old and age is a factor against me, but it's something I feel I could be good at professionally. My problem, is that the more I practice, the more I see my work getting weirder (maybe it's not that weird maybe it's a matter of practicing more fundamentals?), I think I don't really fit in the feature and tv animation market, and I'm a bit lost right now. I want to prepare my portfolio and focus on finding work, but not sure where to send it or where my current style would be well received. It's because of this that I can't decide on what ideas or concepts to work on my portfolio and I end up practicing my fundamentals a lot more than creating ideas and I see my goal getting farther and farther away. I definitely feel stuck. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Roberto C What a wonderful post! I am 36 reschooling myself to get into visdev. So on this part I can relate and just had to comment! Thank you! Regarding the rest of your story. From what I have learned so far from binging the animation industry is that you will need to cater your portfolio. So if you would want to work on family guy you will make a different one than you would for Disney. Some of the personal work you are showing here can still function as a cool addition. You show you can push shapes and have a weird mind. If you can then show how you would add to the company's show I think you will rock! You will bring something new to the table! Like marrying what you can do with what they do! Lightbox2020 had a lot of videos with recruiters, talking about how to get into the industry. You should def link them and show these together with some "married" ones. They can tell you what your next steps would be. I am no professional. As I said, I am still working on that. And this is an excerpt on what I have picked up in the last three years binging the industry. I do hope this helps! And nice work!

What would Marshall from today say to Marshall when he was starting out in art? What are the challenges and advantages of being a mature person still working as an artist? All I hear from the younger crowd are comments that are a lot like an athlete's mindset, and as I get older I'm not sure I want to be like that all the time... but I still want to be able to work. Love you guys.

I am trying to do all the assignments, using the 3D model as reference. Any feedback is appreciated.

Hi Andreia! this is solid! all the heads look similar. The only thing I can see is the line quality, it would help to have an even better read if the inside lines are lighter or thinner, or darken and thicken the outlines. Honestly I'm just nitpicking because it looks so good.
