I knows it's bad but I tried

It’s not bad at all, I really like the rhino head. I think if you worked a bit and came in at a more slanted angle up front it would be even better!

I really enjoyed doing the pear actually but I wasn’t a big fan of the portrait. I think one thing I learned was that realism isn’t my thing and I can’t see myself doing this kind of art for fun. That said, I could see how practicing exercises that strengthen control of value relationships is important. It would be great to have an intuitive grasp of these things, however I just have trouble seeing myself invest hours into getting the values right.

Here’s my pear. Honestly, the hardest part of this project is psychological. “What am I doing?” “You’re never going to be good at drawing.” “This is ridiculous, you’re not artistic.” These are the kinds of thoughts I had while working on the project. I’m going to do my best and keep trying. Even if I don’t get good at drawing, I owe it to myself to not listen to those kinds of thoughts and keep trying.

It looks really good even though you missed the point of the exercise.

Did you do the level 2 assignment too?

You got that right! That's resistance speaking -- if you haven't already, check out The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. It's a wonderful book and he addresses that very topic. It's a yearly read for me. As for your pear, I love it! To get the most out of the assignment, I think it would be beneficial to try to get harder edges on your value shapes. In your drawing here, you have smooth transitions and soft edges, which makes for a great rendered drawing but is less useful for critique, since they are more diffused. It also makes it more difficult to count the total values. If you were to try this technique again, it may be helpful to do a few value scales, shown below, to warm up and then use them to select your value range. Keep your edges hard and try to use all 5 values. Really focus on designing clear shapes for each value. Good luck :)
