Hi, i´m also doing the Drawabox "course" (i´m at Lesson 5, animals) and I highly recommend to continue the lessons of the Drawabox page. Your first attempts are pretty good, and trsust me, after you finish the 250 box challenge (and a couple more lessons) you will feel more comfortable with the spatial rotation.
@catlivesupstairs
Thanks @Haronnh Fernando Ávila vargas - I didn't see this but I've finished the 250 box challenge now and have moved on to lesson 2! It's hard to decide how to balance which course to focus on (the figure drawing one here or Drawabox) - right now I'm sort of switching back and forth, and I'm not sure that's the best approach!
@catlivesupstairs
My first attempt at applying structure to animals - any feedback or advice welcome. I'm also doing the 250 Box challenge at Drawabox - here's hoping that helps with some of this as well.
@hawg
There's a picture of me right below. Please watch that. It's so hard to draw it in three dimensions. I want to draw it in 3D and have perspective, but I don't know how to practice. Please help me. Please teach me the way.
@catlivesupstairs
I'm really struggling with structure as well. I'm doing the Drawabox lessons (lesson 0 and 1 and the 250 Box challenge) at the same time to start to understand some of the perspective and forms better.
Aiden Zeilinger
I did 10 gesture drawings, 2-minutes for each. I feel like I'm not quite understanding the concept. What are my biggest issues here?
@catlivesupstairs
I'm definitely still a beginner so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I would say that you're too focused on the contour and not reducing the pose to the motion/gesture/line of action enough. I had to watch the lesson and draw along about three times before I felt I was starting to understood what I was meant to be doing.
@catlivesupstairs
Hi all, These are my first attempts at applying the structure basics lesson to animals. I'm also doing the 250 Box challenge at Drawabox, which I'm hoping will help me with perspective and spatial rotation, both of which are tricky for me! I can see some of the places where these could be improved, including proportions, but I welcome any feedback or critique. Thanks for looking.
@catlivesupstairs
I don't know if this is useful, but I found this Love Life Drawing video about how artistic knowledge advances really interesting: https://youtu.be/DH-kFJJX2PM

Hey! Good job on these. I like a lot of what you have going on here, especially the one in the bottom left. I think you're correct with saying that you're thinking too much about contour. I agree with everything @Steve Lenze has to say, but what I might add is to try and think of the overall "idea" of the pose more. At this stage in your drawings, you don't want to be including contour at all. Contour is something that you add way later in the end stages of a drawing. An exercise I'd recommend trying to get better at that stuff is to try and simplify poses to a single line. I did some draw overs to give a better idea of what I'm talking about. I also did some very loose draw overs of what I might do to differently. Hope this helps!
@catlivesupstairs
Thank you so much @Kristian Nee ! That's really helpful. I have done a few simplifications like you showed, but I think that's exactly what I need to do more of to start seeing through to the movement in the pose. Thanks for taking the time and for the draw-overs - that's really useful and concrete.

Hi there, @catlivesupstairs! I see you got a bunch of helpful feedbacks already. Hope I’m not too late to catch up with this thread. My take on answering your question: yes, gesture drawing should get easier as you learn more about the figure as long as you keep a “gesture-oriented mindset” as you practice other topics on Figure Drawing. Since this is your first time ever studying gesture and you’ve already done over a hundred quick sketches for practice, my guess is that you’re good to go for the time being. So what I’d encourage is really for you to move on with the course and start studying the Bean and so on (in case you haven’t already) because this variation of subjects can help keep you motivated and prevent you from burning yourself out. Gesture is challenging indeed, and it’s certainly not something to be fully learned in one single moment, it’s something you’ll probably keep practicing throughout your whole artistic life. Studying other topics for a change can help refresh your mind and even open your eyes for further levels of your gesture learning experience in the future. As you keep going, just don’t forget about gesture - keep an eye on it as you observe different poses, try to start all your figure sketches with simple gestural lines whenever possible. By the way, Kristian’s suggestion about simplifying the whole figure to one single line of action can in fact be a great exercise and an effective way of starting any figure sketch, regardless your main goal with it. Hope this helps! Please feel free to pop up questions if you’d like. Best of luck!
@catlivesupstairs
Thank you @Liandro ! I feel very lucky to have so many people take the time to share their thoughts. I think you're right that it's time to move on (and I've started to, as I mentioned in the other thread) but I'm really interested in gesture and would like to keep coming back to them (as well as keeping it in mind while doing next steps).
Liandro
Hey, @catlivesupstairs, I agree with @paper, you’ve been progressing visibly since your last post. This looks like a nice set of gestures, so I’ll just reinforce my previous suggestion of moving on with the course (if you haven’t already). Over practice, you should definitely see things finetune more. Keep it up and feel free to keep sharing your work with us for feedback. Best regards!
@catlivesupstairs
Thank you so much @Liandro! I really appreciate your feedback. I decided that I would do 300 gestures until the end of February and then move on, so I have started the next steps in the course. Thanks again!

Asked for help
2022/2/23. Good morning everybody. Here’s my 30 minutes warming up exercise. Today’s was gesture. Thanks.
@catlivesupstairs
I'm very new to figure drawing so my opinion isn't worth much, but I think these look great! You've really captured the pose and given a strong sense of form and dimension without too much focus on contour. These are what I'm aspiring to! Well done.
