How long is this going to go on? Is it really the single most important thing we have to practice? We've been at it for over 3 months now, and the tedium of watching these seemingly endless videos is exasperating.

With peace and love, I don't agree! I'm a public school teacher, and I am envious of Stan's use of metacognition and scaffolding in his teaching methods. I learn so much from every video, and sometimes I watch them more than once. The concepts he's currently teaching around value have been difficult for me to comprehend, but with each video, I feel like I understand it more. I've been dedicated to this course for about 10 months, and I have seen so much progress in my art! I don't skip any videos, practice every day, and go back to previous content and projects to refresh and look at it with a more experienced perspective! You are definitely entitled to your opinion, but I wanted to vouch for his teaching methods because I see so much progress from this course! I attached some casual sketches from last January (1 & 2) and this January (3, 4, 5). I chose examples that I spent a similar amount of time on, not the best or worst from the bunch. They are totally different, and I feel like I've improved a lot even since January of this year to now. Trust Stan! Trust the process! :)

I spent a lot of time thinking through my decisions, but I still don’t know if I did this quite right! Even if I was unsuccessful for the project, I felt like this exercise provided quality time for practicing observing and simplifying!

About a year of progress!

Thank you for the value tool!
@breakfast
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback! I've learned so much through your course!

I feel like I was doing this wrong! I wasn’t sure if I was capturing the correct values. I also struggled with how many details to include and what to simplify away. Sorolla (2) was my latest attempt, and I thought it was a bit better. I’m not sure though! Some questions I had along the way: How much time should I spend on these? How do I approach dark colors within light and light colors within shadow when it isn’t totally clear? How much detail should go into the shape design?
@breakfast
It was challenging to get a range of values with the 5 pencils I used! I ended up needing to go back and darken many after the first pass.
@breakfast
I didn’t do a ton of clean up because I’d like to see how I improve throughout this section! There is quite a bit of noise, and I think I was pushing my 2B a bit far for the darkest value! Good information to learn though!

I took my time with this one. Still I can spend so much more time studying and trying out all the different games. Most of these assignments are drawn with the model in front of me, only on the first two pages did I experiment with drawing without looking and coming up with a different angle (I didn't feel well the last days but I was determined to put in some work). I did invent an extra game where I would sit down after work and try and remember what I'd studied the day before (without looking at anything that day) and try and draw that from memory (red book example, definitely drawn faster!). PS at first the objects scared me off because they did not spark any interest to me because it looked so boring and grey. But that disappeared when I started playing that little game called 'what shapes can I find' :) I also want to add: I feel like a lot we've been studying comes together in this project and I can't imagine what these pages would've looked like drawn by the me from before the basics course!

To your last point, I always wonder the same!! I wish I could see how it would have looked without all of the hours of practice to compare!
@breakfast
Continuing to practice from this project. From reference, then from memory diff angle, and then from memory diff angle with altered proportions. This is so tough, but I think it’s making me improve? 😂 I struggled with perspective on the first memory exercise where the knee is straight toward the viewer. I also flipped the arm and leg positions to being on the wrong sides for the angle in both memory exercises!
