Some to start! I am not sure if the form intersections are correct, but I’m trying!
Patrick Bosworth
NICE! This looks really good, keep it up!
@breakfast
I think I need to spend a lot of time practicing the intersections!

This is my third attempt at level 1. I tried to improve my process by following the demo. I didn’t have charcoal powder, so I rubbed a charcoal pencil on sandpaper. It doesn’t look as smooth and nice as the powder in the video, but it saved me a lot of time! I still feel unsure of this process, but I see improvement from my first submission!

Oh, I really like this one! The contrasting soft and hard edges adds an extra layer of depth to the drawing.

Level 1: I slowed down a lot for my second attempt. This took about 5.5 hours, and I still feel like I didn’t do it correctly. I know Stan said we didn’t have to blend edges, but I wonder if I still left them too harsh. I also think I over simplified and could have designed my shapes better. I’m going to start another one and see if I can improve!

This looks awesome!

This is a really good drawing! The bold, crisp shapes are very appealing. I really like where the nose overlaps the eye. You handled that area really well. You did great separating the eye and nose. Thanks for sharing 👍

I was very intimidated by this! I made the mistake of scrolling and seeing what everyone else was submitting, and I got major imposter syndrome. My first attempt was tough, and I wasn’t happy with it. I decided to slow down for the next attempt. I’m not finished with my second attempt, but I wanted to show how it’s going mid process. That is about three hours of work. Am I moving too slowly? Am I starting the process correctly? I am struggling to keep everything organized, clean, and interesting. I know how valuable this is because of how challenging it is!

Looking great

I think this is very good. Makes me want to start again and take much more time for the project.

NGL, I am intimidated by this project. I don't know why, but I am. Maybe it's the subject matter. with the complex plane changes and subtle variations in tone. Maybe it's wanting to make good design choices and knowing I still struggle with that. But at the end of the day, no guts, no glory, right? Gotta jump in an have a little courage to fail at the least perilous thing I can do today: draw. Stay safe my LA peeps.

I agree! This is the first project that is making me feel really anxious! I’m glad I’m not alone!
@breakfast
I love how he uses the erasers to create texture!

2 minutes was funny, so I tried a couple more times! I made the third one tiny so I could fill it in a bit more 😂. I tried to have a plan, but once the timer started it went by so fast! I am happiest with my 4:30 - 4:55 attempt. I’m also glad my daily ellipse and circle warm up practices are paying off! I’m eager to try applying these concepts to other objects! Edit: I just realized it was supposed to be 5 minutes for the shortest attempt, not 2 minutes!! I just tried 5 minutes too! It wasn’t as chaotic as 2 minutes, but still very challenging!

How long is this going to go on? Is it really the single most important thing we have to practice? We've been at it for over 3 months now, and the tedium of watching these seemingly endless videos is exasperating.

With peace and love, I don't agree! I'm a public school teacher, and I am envious of Stan's use of metacognition and scaffolding in his teaching methods. I learn so much from every video, and sometimes I watch them more than once. The concepts he's currently teaching around value have been difficult for me to comprehend, but with each video, I feel like I understand it more. I've been dedicated to this course for about 10 months, and I have seen so much progress in my art! I don't skip any videos, practice every day, and go back to previous content and projects to refresh and look at it with a more experienced perspective! You are definitely entitled to your opinion, but I wanted to vouch for his teaching methods because I see so much progress from this course! I attached some casual sketches from last January (1 & 2) and this January (3, 4, 5). I chose examples that I spent a similar amount of time on, not the best or worst from the bunch. They are totally different, and I feel like I've improved a lot even since January of this year to now. Trust Stan! Trust the process! :)

I spent a lot of time thinking through my decisions, but I still don’t know if I did this quite right! Even if I was unsuccessful for the project, I felt like this exercise provided quality time for practicing observing and simplifying!
