AI Ethics, Artists, and What You Can Do About It

Following my AI discussion with developer Evan Conrad I sat down with artists Steven Zapata and Karla Ortiz to get the artist’s perspective of AI.

Who did the thumbnail art for the cover of this video? I think it looks really nice. I am assuming it’s a real artist artwork and not AI. Seems way to good for AI right now.

I have a practical question here. I’m wondering if we post art but not tag it with any description can the AI still use it? If I post a drawing and label it just “Art” will the AI know how to classify it for the scraping? Is that an AI “safe” way to post images?

This discussions was a bit of a depressing listen but very important. I was thinking if the AI art generators prompts could have an in built restriction that forbids them from using artist's names to somehow forbid them from replicating their style. That might be a long shot, but I guess it's something. I also think it would be cool if you interviewed a lawyer about the ramifications of the breach in copyright AI art is. I think it would be cool if you talked to someone like LegalEagle over on Youtube you could be bringing more people outside of artists and AI tech people into this discussion.

Hey Stan - thank you for having this conversation and the previous one with Evan. The lens of data acquisition—is a significant lever—and does bring together everyone. The EU introduced legislation called GDPR (years ago), but that didn't stop data mining; worth mentioning this was primarily focused on the social media giants—but I guess machine learning practices for acquiring data might fall under it. I know California also has some data privacy laws. All-in-all I don't know how this gets sorted, but believe something fruitful could happen if you all meet in SF and continue the conversation. Attached is a screenshot from Open A.I.s career page, it's safe to say they are more than leaning into DALL E-2, — thanks again! Murph
