Time to make those dolla’ dolla’ bills fly yo! Marshall and I talk about various ways artists make money such as freelancing, getting a job, and starting your own business. We also dive into our own stories about how we made money and answer a voicemail question about taking commissions. And Kim Jung Gi drew an unflattering portrait of Stan.

thanks Stan and Marshall, thanks a lot my online professors. I hope I also become successful, for me success has always been into imprinting my name in most expensive art ever sold, I don't know how I am gonna get to that level but first thing first I need some relief so I am gonna freelance as graphic designer for next 4 months and will try my utmost best to quit part time job, than I will think about something else
a bit of recap, in 4 months or 5, i achieved absolutely nothing, but good thing my portfolio showed tremendous amount of growth, i got on talking stage with some clients, got barely any work at sites but again talking just talking boost my confidence. Now i dont know how out of nowhere my professor asked me to be assist them in their class for drawing, i am not earning anything but its like a course, which again i am really proud of, still i dont know why. ANDDDD I am trying to make vinyl covers, small stickers and put them on easy, marketplace, ebay thanks to this podcast. I dont know again if i am gonna earn anything like a respectable amount but ill try to survive.
thanks to this episode I am gonna quit my part time job in 4 months, that's an estimated guess I just made because I am confident in your podcast. Thanks, in advance.(from future by my overthinking skills).
Appreciated both perspectives! Stan and I had similar trajectories. I started out as a music teacher, switched industries, and now take Proko lessons in my off hours. :)
Great episode as always!
The idea of "I charged 50 dollars for a portrait, but I was young and bad." is already wild to me. I've charged fictional currency worth nothing. The most I've ever charged for a piece was 100 dollars.
Any trip into an art space with lots of young people and you can see them scrambling to offer the lowest price, in order to get commissions. Now once you grow up a bit and hit a certain level in your artwork, that certainly changes, and prices (comparatively) skyrocket, but usually those artists are still selling themselves short. It's such a saturated market. And it doesn't help that most people with "real jobs" are both underpaid themselves, as well as used to undervaluing art.
I'm no economist, but if I wanted to make money on my art, I don't think I could handle the freelance world.
