Thank you for showing us how you created a beautiful portrait of Pete. I occasionally used pastels years ago, but no longer. My drawing came out very photographic-looking. Not like painting-like you have done. Not sure if it is the issues of edges, or value, or something else. Did I work too much to obtain the likeliness?

I think you did very well with the face and the like this is very good and not a problem at all. I would say his vast and shirt are where you could have given a more painterly effect with Boulder strokes, and it would’ve given the whole pastel a different feeling. Use the side of the pastel when doing the larger areas to contrast with the detail when you’re doing a face.

This is my first attempt to a pastel portrait. I have very limited colour choices and mostly hardish pastels., but enjoyed the prosess very much.
