I worked over this a little bit on my iPad. He sure to be using a small enough brush to think about drying when you’re doing this. Get in closer like I did with the eye and try to be more accurate with your shapes. As you move to the other side, always measure across to get things lined up. Just be more specific as you move forward. Take note of other things I did on this overlay

This is challenging. I am just a bit confused about the dark half tones. .... when I squint they seem to fall for me into the shadow area rather than the lights. I did work from a laptop though which consistantly seems to change things. But my black and white printout also darkens the halftones. Does the darks end then at the darkest edge?......The colour vibration is very interesting. I would like to explore that more. Thank you Morgan. It was a precious class. (photographs taken in different lighting.)

I like your brushwork. You have a consistent style working here. It's not lifeless and dull. I like it. simplify the scarf to bolder big shapes of light and it will be a nice complement to the busier areas of the face.

This is my first attempt to a pastel portrait. I have very limited colour choices and mostly hardish pastels., but enjoyed the prosess very much.

I have always experienced young mature lady portraits to be the most difficult to do, and this one confirms my believe.... I tried again but what a struggle.

I really struggled alot with the lady. It went through metamorphosis a few times. It is the best I could get it being as off as it is, but I will try again. Don't know if using a stump is a bad idea. But I really used it.

slow down. compare as you go with the reference . Don't move forward if anything is off along the way. the old man one is really good. your measurements on the lady are hurried looking.

Hi, I do not have ivory black paint yet and am keen to start painting. Could I use paynes grey and perhaps burnt umber mixed or ultramarine and burnt umber? or will it not work the same?
Morgan Weistling
You are asking for trouble. I really wouldn't do it without black.

Asked for help
I did the observational drawing on drawing paper, but decided to stick to the grid for my painting, which I must admit, did not find easie,r for some or other reason. My acrylics feel a bit plastic like so I struggled to get the drawing done. Hope my oil paints sticks to this.

For the vase I use 2 outside vertical lines and 1 center line. I also had to turn it upside down.....scary to see what one can miss when you do that! It is not perfect but tried to use as little help as possible. For the head I did use a few measurements for some key proportions. Tried to eye as much as possible. needless to say, I did have to use my eraser here and there. further I used black matt graphite pencil, a mono zero eraser and a home made stump. I did struggle to get the darks dark enough.

impressive!
