The Art & Science of Figure Drawing

Shading

For today's project, you're going to add cast shadows to your drawing. Remember:

  • Look for two types of cast shadows:
    • Shadows cast by one part of the figure onto another part.
    • Shadows cast by the figure onto an adjacent surface.
  • Cast shadows should have hard edges that soften as they get farther from the object casting them.
  • Occlusion shadows should be the darkest value in your drawing.
  • Carefully craft the shape of the cast shadow, but feel free to adjust it for better communication.
  • If a cast shadow looks unappealing or confusing, omit it.

Good luck with your project, and we'll explore center lights and mid-tones in the next lesson.
