The Art & Science of Figure Drawing

Shading

Dividing Light from Shadow

28

For today's project, use your drawing from previous lessons and follow these steps:

  1. Select a photo to work with and produce a drawing ready for shading.
  2. Divide light from shadow by drawing the line of termination for each part of the body.
  3. Lay down a light wash of value in the shadow side, using only two values: the value of the paper and the light wash of shadow.
  4. Keep the drawing simple, focusing on the basic light and shadow patterns without adding details.

Remember, the goal is to capture the fundamental division of light and shadow. Good luck!
