Lighting/Shading
3yr
Matthew Sanchez
Hi I just started to learn how to do lighting/ shading about two weeks ago, and these are some studies that I did. I would really appreciate any advice on how to improve as I am struggling with it so far
Thank you all very much for the help I really appreciate it and will take your advice work hard to improve. Thank you
Hey Matthew, your drawings are looking good. I suggest having a clearer seperation between the shadow shape and the half tones.
Having a good reference is really important for making this easier. Use references with 1 single light source and make sure there isn't too much ambient lighting. This will make the seperation between lights and darks very clear. Once a single light source is mastered then you can move onto others but 1 step at a time.
Dorian has a good video on prokos chanel about the terminator line (line seperating half tones and the shadow shape).
Look forward to seeing your improvements. Good luck

Hi Matthew! These are good! You're doing great here. You might play with the concept of the shadow edges getting less crisp and dark the further away it is from the object casting the shadow. here is a link to a study guide on the concept that may help clarify what Im saying. https://www.strujillo.ca/uploads/2/9/2/4/29246107/gtglightandshadowpart1.pdf
hope that helps! Keep up the great work!
Hey there! Great job! @Marco Bucci and @Dorian Iten have several youtube videos where they talk about shading. I recommend checking them out.
Right now I feel like you need to focus on your line quality and the way you handle the pencil. The lack of hard edges makes the drawings really hard to read.
Keep up the good work! :)
Hello!
As Michael mentioned, I would recommend looking at objects in your home and learning to see how light reacts on the object. I would also suggest not holding back on making your shadows darker. Increasing the contrast could help with defining the shapes.
like a friend always tells me, don’t be afraid to make your shadows really dark :) . You can always go back and lighten them later if needed.
hope this helps!
Hello Matthew, I would highly recommend Doian Iten’s class on shading. It has great information and exercises to walk you through the steps of shading. I would also recommend trying to draw objects you can around your house with a light source (preferably a single light source). Observe where the shadows are located and areas where the light is hitting. Practicing with real objects helps solidify the concepts. Hope that helps.
