Day 9 - Facial Expressions - 12 Days of Proko
11mo
Today we’re studying facial expressions! The reference pack covers a broad range of emotions, including the common happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger, surprise, and contempt. Using our Timer tool, start with a session of quick 2-3 minutes per image to capture these fleeting expressions just like you’d have to do while sketching out in the wild. Then do a session of longer duration, 10-30 minutes, to capture the subtleties and the deformations of the forms that define each expression.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Go to https://proko.com/timer, select the Day 9 reference pack, choose the quantity and duration in the right sidebar, and start the session!
When you’re done, share your expressions by replying here in this thread for a chance to win some prizes.
PRIZES:
1 Medium Wacom Intuos Wireless Tablet
1 Proko Skull
3 Portraits and Expressions Reference Bundle
1 Portraits Study - Light & Emotion Vol. 3 Model Pack

Doing this more for fun than for the contest. Seeing what others have done, there's two things I want to get much better at: cleaner lines and more expressive faces.
I managed to squeeze in this expressions drawing before the end. I think it turned out alright, I didn't really capture the upturned head, and I didn't get the squinting look enough, and I think the eyes are not wide enough. But I kind of like looking at it all the same. I think, like most of my drawings, it looks much better when I look at the thumbnail or on my iPhone screen, than when it's full screen on a bigger monitor. I feel like that means that I at least did something right, that I like it then.
Switched to digital on Day 9. I did only these two, 35 and 45 minutes respectively. Looking at them now I feel like they're two different people haha. Still need to work on the likeness I guess
I feel I am almost doing a public service posting my drawings --- hopefully they make everyone feel really good about their own! lol :)
I did a quick five minute sketches. And did a more detailed thirty minute one, but I didn't really like how it turned out.
This was so much fun. It seems the time limit gives me energy, and I'm loving the feeling. I didn't have time for the longer drawing, but here are my 2 min sketches from tuesday and yesterday collected. I'm struggling a bit with finding brushes that feel comfortable and learning the digital stuff overall, but I got good ideas and nice new findings experimenting with this challenge.
I had no idea I could draw a face in 3 minutes. What else is possible? It makes me wonder.
Kids are unwell so was only able to get in some time for a couple. Really fun, thanks Stan and team!
30 min + I tried to experiment more than usual, that was realy fun. I wished i had time to do more.
Attempt made. Day 9. Didn't realize there were provided references, so I pulled some from Google Images.
Here's my submission for Day 9 challenge of facial expressions. Thank you @Proko for this amazing challenge, it's alot of fun.
Reposting because I believe I messed up the last time, because I can't seem to find it. So this one was HARD, very difficult to capture the expression in the 2min warmups, I felt like I could barely set up the loomis head in that time. Then the 30 min practice really exposed to me my overal lack in ability to move the skin around on the skull. Very informative an I'm happy to have done this!
Thank you so much for these amazing references! These took 3 minutes each, but I went back and refined some of my favourites later, for extra fun :)
