Day 8 - Gesture - 12 Days of Proko
11mo
We’re exploring a classic Proko topic today: gesture. Gesture drawing is all about capturing the action of the pose. As you’re sketching, focus on the movement throughout the body parts and the expression rather than the details of the anatomy. Use our timer tool for a quicksketch session, ensuring you’re not spending too long on a pose. 5 minute poses are a classic. If you're feeling brave, challenge yourself with 1 minute poses, leaving only enough time to capture the most essential action lines. The references we’ve provided will give you a range of dynamic poses to practice from.

Really enjoyed this one! Never thought I'd enjoy gesture drawing this much haha. All are 5 minute sketches. Kinda lost my grip with the last one, I still couldn't tell at what point it went wrong haha. Certainly the leg on the left is too short and the pose looks wrong, but I'm not too sure. I was mostly focused on the gesture of the arms so I tuned out everything else it seems. All in all, I love this challenge!
Was a blast! Some poses just clicked more than others :> I used a much larger brush for pose 8 and found it much easier to just flow and keep flowing through the pose. Lots too learn!
Oh man I remembered how much I loved gesture drawing. Haven't done it in a while and to resume it was great. Some of the poses are so tricky, it took me a bit more that 5 min to figure them out. But some I did in a less time though. Still not an easy task, but I guess I just need to practice more. Mike Mattesi's books are huuuge inspiration for doing so!
A batch of 2-3 minute sketches. There's still too much detail and I'm not pushing the poses as much as I'd hoped.
I don't have access to the daily ref packs but I still wanted to try practicing gestures. I think I'm still struggling with these because I'm trying so hard to keep the anatomy proportions intact instead of just following the movement.
5 minute poses. I've never tried to use a timer before. I find it difficult not to get carried away nonetheless.
Wasn’t able to participate yesterday, but I wanted to post some of my gesture drawings anyways. Since I wasn’t able to find the “day 8” reference material, I’ve used the “gesture” photo pack.
One of my efforts I copied from proko. I’ve tried this drawing many times in the past, and only now I’m finally glad with the result. Took me 5 minutes, as I imagine it took him the same amount of time.
Thanks!
I forgot to post these yesterday but here are my gesture drawings for day 8!!! I never did gesture until last fall when I decided to take an art class. The teacher made us do so much gesture and now it's something I love to do.
