I tried again. This time giving more time to the shoe. I tried to simplify the contours. the laces gave me a little trouble. Looking for critique and for advice/permission for moving on.

Second attempt with the snail. I tried to use some guide lines to better do proportions. I still didn't do it right, but the entire drawing became easier with this new try.

Maybe darken the other shadow value to give the drawing more dimension.

You are 100% on the right track here. I think you can go further with this one. Try bringing some dark values into the pear. You have separated the darks and lights via the cast shadow and the pear respectively. If you squint your eyes at the reference image, the value of the cast shadow and the core shadow of the pear are similar.
