Hi there! I have filled many sheets of paper with just lines, but I can't seem to get the hang of tapering the start of a stroke. Getting the end tapered is not a problem. I have practiced the "landing and take off" method but somehow I keep getting an abrupt "landing". Does anyone have any tips on getting this part smoother? Thank you!

Those lines are pretty nice already. I found that when I relax more and start moving my pencil before putting it on the paper it start tapering. Also, I think of my pencil as feeling like a brush and that works pretty well too. So relax and don't push the pencil down, let it fall naturally on the paper, as if it just happens to be there while you're moving.

Keep practicing! Fill pages and pages of lines. When drawing the line, I use less pressure>add more pressure for the middle of the line>then less pressure for the end of the line. The hard landing is a struggle for sure but I'm sure you'll get there!

Here are my drawings. feedback is appreciate.

Wow, these look great! The only feedback I could give you is that you could keep your search lines in, instead of erasing them. The exercise is about being loose and sketchy. Your drawings look nice, but they are quite tight. Especially with the penguin and the hand. Nice work!
@wendoline
I wanted to do the drawing from imagination exercise, but ended up just observing my inspiration. So it became a drawing from observation practice. That’s why I post this here. I noticed that I tend to go back to drawing short lines so I will practice more with making longer, smooth and confident lines. Hopefully that will give me the confidence to draw from imagination as well.

My first attempt for the penguin felt okay in terms of line work, but not so much in terms of gesture. So I tried a second one and I captured the gesture much better, I believe. This time I started with the overall big shape and built from there. With robot girl I made the mistake to not draw through and look at the bigger shapes in my first attempt. In the second attempt that was much better. The hand. Let's please skip that one XD. I tried several times but it got progressively worse XD. I don't even know what tips to ask for, so I'll just try again later but I wanted to show you my attempts.

I decided to give level 2 a try but ended up only doing the camel, which I felt confident about. I think I had the confident lines down but it gets a little bit trickier with the smaller parts like the toes.
@wendoline
Tried to focus a lot on CSI lines and confident lines. In the boots This was a lot tougher because of so many small shapes. But I am happy with the result. My first snail I did without a lay-in, the other two I did, which made it a a bit easier to draw in the actual lines. Great exercise !

Hi everyone! Excited to be here and to start my illustration journey! With my pear I noticed that the values are the most difficult part. I easily made the difference between the values too small. So any tips on that and shading/colouring evenly are highly appreciated. I also tried the exercise digitally. That way I had more control over the value and I could focus more on the shape of the values. Although this version might have turned out a bit too complex. What do you think? Thank you!
@karlyn
I connected the ends with another stroke to make it look like one long stroke. It seems that I could get the tapper part at the ends of my strokes and not the beginning. Guess I’ll have to practice this stroke more…

I have the same thing! It has been a while since you posted this, so did you find a way to practice the taper at the beginning of your stroke as well? It would be great to hear your experience. Thank you! Wendy
