so I've been a bit spotty with my uploading (I am doing assignments, just had a lot on my plate and not a ton of time to scan my sketchbooks and do posts. I did finish the class though!). This was fun and these are actually re-designs of my originals. I don't think I would usually go for this graphic a style but I enjoyed experimenting. Once again I think I would benefit from completing my figure drawing course. Though my understanding of anatomy, pose, and gesture are improving, I'm not completely intuitively comfortable applying these things to design (so no, David, the fancy stuff isn't working yet... not totally). However, I feel I did alright representing these guys. Maybe the peace keeper looks a bit more than slightly sadistic (more like a villain or anti-hero than someone who is kind hearted) but I like how I distorted her anatomy. I feel that the leader's prop could have been more creative and her gesture a bit more loose, but I feel her anatomical design is working for her character. The rule follower has my favorite prop conceptually, I feel his character reads the most successfully, but that may be because as an awkward and anxious person, I can literally feel his gesture XD.

I like the style of your lines and shading they make me feel like I am looking at a story from ancient times, they really suit the title. The peace keeper seems old and wise but still laughing at life and her walking stick looks like a companion who is in on the joke. I would agree with you my favorite is the rule follower prop which has so much character to it, it jumps off the page. I like the way you have the rule follower holding on to him for dear life

Please see below my first 6 sketches of people in my local coffee shop. This was allot of fun and very challenging I think I might have grown as a person doing this assignment. I am sure the first person I sketch I might have look at him a few too many times. Do we look once? that should be okay, twice? O no, three times? now I am in trouble for sure. What is the ethical thing to do should I ask them "can i sketch you?". I am going back tonight to do some more sketches. My one family member said If we are taking a picture out in public and someone walks by in the back ground we don't ask can I have this picture with you in it, my other family member was not as cool about it. What do you think?, did anyone experience the same thing? Also please critique my sketches. Thank you

I really understand the struggle you are feeling with how long and often to look at people, i felt the same. The thing i started to do was looking at the person for a little bit, trying to memorize the most important things and than draw the things i remembered. Most of the people i started to draw were just people walking by. Sometimes in the train i also drew people where i could look multiple times, i still tried to not look too often so that they wouldnt notice me. And for some general drawing/practicing advice i would say that you should focus on the things that make each person unike. All of the persons that i drew had something i liked. Maybe it was their pose, or expression or the long beard, thats why i chose to sketch them. And also always try to include thinking about some of the things David Colman talked about. Straights, curves, simple complex, pose, silhouette, and so many more there are so many things to think about while drawing. It is very challenging for quite some time, but thats a good thing, if it were already easy you wouldnt be learning.

Asked for help
Hello, I have completed my first assignment and I'd like to ask you for feedback. It was my first time in many years to draw traditionally so I only had available standard pen, pencil, and notebook for it.   The first pages marked with 1 were done from the photo ref but after reading comments under the video I drew the rest from real life and videos where people were moving. With each next page, I tried to push simple shapes more and more but I have to say it's harder than it looks.

Very nicely done, I too am inspired to try

Hi! I would be glad to get your feedback on my assignment. I'm in a quite isolated place now, so I had an opportunity to draw people from life only once+I drew my dog. Other drawings were done from TV and photos (I put a time limit on myself and spent no more than 5 min per sketch). I marked which sketches are done from what source.

These look very nice, the sketch of your dog is my fav. Nice character

Sorry about posting in the wrong tab. I am not able to go anywhere at the moment so I drew from movies.

I thought I had posted, but it’s gone now. Since I am homebound, I went to YouTube and searched “people watching airport” and that’s what I’m sketching from. First two sketch pages before going to bed.

These look great

Having some odd things happen. I had edited my last post to add more imagery and when I checked it later, the edit was gone. So here is my master drawing from Milt Kahl’s beautiful work.

Nice idea making him think, very creative

Part 2 of my assignment! Four of them I got watching TV instead of in person (this felt harder which was a shock!). The master study does seem beneficial. The ones with the kids were in person and some the newest of the batch. So happy to be taking this class and excited to make improvements!

I like your sketches they capture each person uniqueness
