I am in love with the classic painted Hollywood movie poster aesthetic, especially horror ones. It's amazing how busy, bright and colourful they were compared to their modern counterparts! So, I've decided to take every artist's nightmare and the story of my life essentially, and turn it into a classic scary flick. Enjoy! I'm sure you all can relate ;P
Painted digitally from scratch.
Hey guys!
I grew up watching superheroes being awesome and saving the world from one apocalypse after the other. I loved seeing them win over the evil mastermind with a glorious plan to end the world as we know it. Then I started to figure out that the world is not exactly black and white. Unfortunately the big bad guy is not always wrong and the great good guy is not always right. Hence the question: What is a hero anyway?
What is a Hero Anyway is somewhere in the fantasy action-adventure genre.
What do you do when one day a guy knocks on your door and says that he is Time and he's running out of you. Of you, the people, who believe in him and think that he is a good guy and not a villian. Time doesn't mean to rob you from anything or make you rush and hurry your life away. It's the other guy, he says, the monster with the black-hole eyes that eats the people away.
So of course, you go and help Time out to kill the monster with your cool knife and somehow magically appeared fighting skills. But the story wouldn't be whole without the helper: the mystical scorpion, fierence and wonderful who as a guardian, would always show the way in the most unexpected places (while also somehow weirdly sounding like your mother).
Lots of revenge and ass kicking with a funny bird sidekick voiced over by Charlize Theron.
In the tarot deck The Fool represents new beginnings, having faith in the future, being inexperienced, not knowing what to expect, having beginner's luck, improvisation and believing in the universe. Even if you're not the hero of the story, that's all you'll ever need.
As an artist and a new father, the idea of 'creation' has never been more real or all-consuming to me. Most acts of creation are born of love, conviction, and maybe a dash of ego... but how much control do we really have over our creative process? Ideas flash through our mind, seeming to come from some primordial fog. Is it dipping into the bright pools of our subconscious... Or somewhere darker? What TERRORS might we UNLEASH upon THE WORLD?
Some of my absolute favorite movies in the world are horror/scifi/fantasy flicks from the 70s and 80s. Delightfully low budget and cheesy affairs that are best watched in the company of good friends. I can remember walking the the video store as kid looking at all the amazing VHS covers for these kinds of movies and my mind racing with ideas about how cool the movie must be. Often the covers were more evocative than movies. Much like adventure comics of the 50s and 60s. Anyway, this is my homage to a poster style that is near and dear to my heart featuring my family. Hope it's as evocative to you as those old covers were to me.
Movie trailer voice:
"A dramedy based on a true story. Meet Anne, who would rather be called Anna. Why?
Because it is an anagram, which is cool.
Her colleagues mistakenly call her Anna all the time anyway.
Her best friend, who is an extrovert and a very successful person in life is called Anna.
And, last but not least, a man, who Anne fancies, sent her a romantic dadaist poem, which contains the line "Anna, I love you!", which left her very confused.
Watch Anne fail epically in trying to be someone she is not and in finally realizing that it might, in fact, be not as bad as she thought to be her true self."
Thank you for this challenge, it was a lot of fun. I am really looking forward to all final posters. The ones so far are quite amazing!
