The trickiest part of emphasis is figuring out what to emphasize.

When I wasn't worried about what each line was looking like, it was a lot easier to get the proportions right, especially in the hand.
You must have some hands experience they look great. Clean lines! Really good shape work on the penguin. Maybe you could take advice from Stan's demo with the vr gauntlet and focus on simplifying out the individual digits.

That's the right idea! Using searching lines will help you find the correct placement and then you can worry about your final line quality. Good work :)

Pretty happy with the boots, the shoelaces hurt my eyes. Avoiding chicken scratch was tricky and I wasn't sure how much I was supposed to simplify the different elements.

First attempt at the pear.
New to the idea of simplifying, I feel like I'm either seeing detail where there is none, or I'm completely missing detail in the lighter areas.
This has also made me painfully aware of needing to practice shading using the tip of the pencil.
And now that I look at it I definitely used more than 5 values (whoops)

I think you did a great job! I do see 6ish values, so maybe try practicing with a value scale to warm up (this will also help you with your pencil dexterity). I can tell you understand the principle though, and I like how you've defined the planes of the pear here. Hope this helps! :)
