added comment inDrawing Basics
Hi! Just started following the free version of the course, really excited to find out I could still make posts here.
Although I don't have access to the project videos I've been trying my best to do them using the images in the free critique videos or just other images I find on the internet to put the theoretical stuff I've learned into practice.
Here's what I've drawn so far and my commentary on it:
1. The pear! Drew it before I watched the critique video.
2. The face, had trouble with figuring out where the highlights in the hair should be, as well as just struggling with the values in general because of the red pencil. I also had trouble with simplifying the shapes where the lighter values of the face are, so those are a little more loose
3. Decided to have a go at sketching from imagination after I watched the demo, so I looked up images of toucans and drew them.
4. This one is also of toucans from reference, although I begin to try to exaggerate them a bit here
5. A page of toucans from imagination, trying to exaggerate and cartoonize them a bit
6. The full page sketch without shading
7. The final drawing. For having almost never drawn animals before I am pretty happy with how it turned out.
8. Drawn before watching the critique video (made the mistake of trying to copy it exactly lol)
9. Loose doodle of how I could try to push the gesture. Drawn after watching the critique video
10. My second attempt, after watching the critique video. Not happy with this one at all. Tried to push the gesture but I couldn't quite tell what I was supposed to push. I think it's a lot harder for me to push and exaggerate human shapes at the moment because of all the different limbs going in different directions. Was also getting increasingly frustrated which led to me rushing and my lines being bad.
11. Ended up doodling the penguin because it seemed easier and I needed to end the session on a better note lmao
12. After watching the video on habits for good line quality, and practicing the tips individually, I did a full page drawing, trying to practice all of them at once. Noticed I was struggling a lot with the S-curves, I ended up mostly separating them into multiple c-curves to be able to get them somewhat accurate. Also struggled a lot with ghosting. I mostly ended up ghosting just a little bit at the beginning of a line instead of actually following the full motion before drawing it. Finally, I also noticed that I struggle with getting a stroke that is properly tapered at the beginning and not just the end. Overall I'm pretty happy with the final drawing.
13. The reference picture for the previous drawing. Chose to draw something more cartoony so I could focus on the lines that are already clearly there instead of worrying about simplifying a realistic image. (art is by Sage Cotugno, I believe)
14. Drew cubes to test the different ways to use line weight! (don't know if my shading makes sense on any of these) This is the Hierarchy of Importance one.
15. The Depth and Form cube
16. The Light and Shadow cube.
Any qritique (both positive and negative) on both the drawings themselves or my mindset/reasoning is of course heavily appreciated!!
Also sorry for the incredibly long post xd

Your drawings of the birds are fluid. The line work is gestural and rhythmic. Great job

Well, I'm not freaking Leonardo. Tried to focus on how he used lines to highlight the outline of the face.
It feels like you understood the importance of focusing on prominent lines for the outer contours. Your light insinuation of the hair is also an excellent touch.
I suppose the accuracy of the proportions and measurements can improve with time and dedication, but thankfully, the point of the assignment is line weight.

Here is my project, I found it tricky to still relax myself and feel out the forms.
The bird exhibits a relatively thorough understanding of the lessons from the simplified shapes/edges project, and your tapered strokes are representative of knowledge regarding the need for relaxation in confidence for your strokes. That said, there is still anxiety present. The lines are thin and messy in places, and it feels like you are allowing the tip of your pencil to guide you instead of vice versa.
Honestly, though, this is a successful attempt. I look forward to seeing your future progression!

Alright, 4th attempt. This is probably the best I can get it with my current abilities
It is a bit difficult to tell the value difference from the cast shadow and the values near the ambient occlusion at the bottom of the pear. That said, you differentiated the planes into clear shapes. It looks like you didn't include the core shadow (darkest shadow) in the drawing. Overall, you got the basics--simplifying shapes using clear and crisp edges.

Here are my pears for the level one project. (The first was on my own and the second was along with the demo) I definitely struggled with overcomplicating the shapes. Any critique or feedback would be greatly appreciated!
With the second pear your shapes are more well defined, and the edges are sharper. Your improvement is obvious. Nice job!
