Here is my assignment. First is Light and Shadow, Second is Importance. I quite enjoyed this project though I worry I might have gone too thick with my lines.
Rachel Dawn Owens
I love how bold you went with some of your lines!

Here is my project, I found it tricky to still relax myself and feel out the forms.
Liam Gordon
The bird exhibits a relatively thorough understanding of the lessons from the simplified shapes/edges project, and your tapered strokes are representative of knowledge regarding the need for relaxation in confidence for your strokes. That said, there is still anxiety present. The lines are thin and messy in places, and it feels like you are allowing the tip of your pencil to guide you instead of vice versa. Honestly, though, this is a successful attempt. I look forward to seeing your future progression! I like the bird

Here is my first attempt with the project. I was having a lot of trouble getting a straight line across the full page for the snail.
Shelly Ryder
Straight lines are hard and take a lot of practice! I struggled with that too
@cobaltfoxartist
I have attempted the project again after seeing Stan's Critique and demo videos.

Nice work! The structure and shape designs are very pleasing! One thing I noticed is your light halftone is very close in value to your background, which leaves your lights looking very dark. You could try to use a kneaded eraser to lighten some of the area to get the pear to pop out a bit more from the background, and balance the contrast between the light halftone and highlights. Dorien Iten did a great video about this worth checking out! Hope this helps, keep up the good work! https://www.proko.com/lesson/mind-blowing-realistic-shading-tricks/assignments

This is my first attempt at drawing the pear. I have difficulty identifying the different values and finding the edges of the shadows.

Try squinting your eyes while looking at the subject

Congrats for completing the assignment! The way I would approach this is to imagine the pear as a "low-poly" 3D model with geometric planes. The planes facing towards the light source (which is coming in from the right side of the reference image) are going to be lighter, and the planes facing away from the light source are going to be darker. This is a very simplified example because there are obviously nuances in the plane changes of a real pear, but this method can make the idea a bit more digestible. You can also think in ratios -- since you are using 3 lighter values and 2 darker values to complete this assignment, you would expect to see a larger area of lighter values on the surface of the pear in your drawing. In yours, it looks about equal. Hope this helps and I hope to see more of your work :)
