I was "bad" at art in HS and never went back. A recent injury disrupted life, a video made me draw a map, and down the rabbit hole I went.

What is the manufacturer of that clipboard? I like the mechanism.

Two questions: 1) how do I empty the staedtler sharpener once it gets full? 2) is the hole on the bottom for storing the extra white bits?

I'm pretty sure the bottom hole just forms a post to attach the metal sharpener to. I went and got my spare felt's thinking your idea with a little tape was genius, but felts are just to large meaning they would be impossible to get back out.

First assignment done. I like it.

For my "best" work I've needed a ruler to inform me the correct width of a person or object (held up at arms length). Should I get away from using a ruler for relative scale? My initial pear without the ruler is really narrow.

Taking measurements is really useful. If you want to try calibrating your "eyeballing" try the rough lay in, then go back and see where you're missing it with measurements. I kept making heads from profile view way too narrow, so I sort of "self calibrate" now and start a little wider than what I think at first, seemed to help me a lot.

Aww man, he didn't cover how to use the pencil sharpener I was just given.

That's a classic. It's probably older than some of the students in this course. And it will probably last longer than some of the others.

I got my sketch book! Previously when drawing I would keep my pinky barely touching the desk to keep a consistent pencil angle. When I get to the edge of the page it is pretty annoying being an inch above my desk. Am I supposed to be able to draw with a hovering hand? If not, is there anyhting wrong with tearing the sketch book apart to only work on a single page at a time?
Samantha Maggard
I pull the paper out of my sketchbook too.
