Had to take a little break from practicing the fundamentals and just get back to drawing for pure enjoyment! Unfortunately when I do that I revert to my most comfortable medium which is “graphite”. There is nothing wrong with graphite in my opinion. Just trying to broaden my horizons with charcoal like Stan, Patrick, Erik, & Jeff. Hopefully one day I will be just as comfortable with charcoal as I am with graphite. Who knows?!? Any suggestions on fully moving to charcoal would be appreciated.

More practice of the "bean!" Oh, the bean exercise is also great for portraits. Especially when the face is tilted or slanted. Because the face in it's simplest shape is an oval in my opinion.

Great mileage and observations! Something that the bean is great at is finding the relationship of the two masses, e.g. how they push against one another, or overlap, or stretch away or stretch towards a particular direction. Really emphasizing this helps both create a unified structure, and also one with believable volume and energy. I added some examples of how this can be further pushed, I hope it helps :)

The “bean” assignment unfortunately slowed my progress in this class. And almost prevented me from even attempting further lessons for two reasons. It was difficult for me to understand why and how you practice the “bean” exercise. Even though Stan clearly explains why in the beginning of the lesson and provides examples of how to perform the exercise. But I guess seeing is believing! Because I saw some students work on another platform (YouTube) where the drawings of the model did not have the correct twist and contortion. It was stiff particularly in the rib cage and pelvis area. The rest of the drawings looked good though. But the center of the drawing was lacking... So, with this new information I will be practicing the “bean” for a while in place of doing quick sketch exercise for an hour. I hope this quick explanation helps any future or current students. Best of luck!

This is Frank Frazetta's "The Huntress". I was totally blown away by his art. I did my best to remake it without much shadow. I tried to convey hierarchy, shadow, and depth with my lines. I know the proportions of the drawing are off. I enjoyed drawing this very much! I appreciate any and all comments. Thank you so much! :D

Nice work! keep at it... Only advice I could give is more gesture and edges. IE: Things in real life or on Franks painting there is no thick black out line.

OK, so I am finally starting to create charcoal drawings that are halfway decent. But my question is are there any other students using the overhand grip? And if so, is their shoulder hurting them too? Side Note: Found this amazing website that has archived and documented a lot of Artwork from the 3rd century all the way to the 19th century. The image quality is amazing and would make for a great site for anyone trying to do a master study of any of the Old Masters! I was reluctant to share this resource, but I figure we are all here to help one another… https://www.wga.hu/index.html So, Cheers!
