You're right, the IT band is taught over the vastus lateralis, but won't be straight because it follows the contour of the muscle. Also, it will be barely visible on the right leg because of the angle and twist of the leg.

Nice study!
It helped me to memorize the shape of the IT-band in the 3D model (I like to think of a gun holster XD). It helps me with the insertions; tensor fascia latae on the front plane, gluteus medius on top plane, maximus on the back plane.
