I really agree with the output aspect. What I find really works for me is getting stuck into 'projects'. In the recent case its been comics. My goal for November (NaNoWriMo but comics) is 100 pages in the month but I'm dividing it up into issues. I've improved a lot. Also its helped a lot of my other skills you don't really practice when doing general art. Like writing, pacing, shot composition etc.
It's part of a general thing I've been trying I've called 'modeling'. That is I select someone who does something I wish I could do. Then break it down into a set of behaviours. And for professional artists, what has become clear to me is you need to put in the hours. But be careful, still find time for play and fun drawing or you'll burn out.
Are more lessons to come or is it just 27?
Good morning, @artskill101 The Marvel course is currently in progress, meaning there are many more lessons, projects, demos, etc. to come!
Thank you for sharing this. Lots of great pieces of life advice. Sometimes life just happens and it's so hard to keep up or make the time for art. This was extremely helpful to hear.
I just love how Ryan is always drawing
This was a GREAT panel. I really wish you were able to continue going. Could have used another hour or two.
I literally came up with the analogy between practicing art fundamentals and workouts yesterday when I was in the gym. It's really obvious when you think about it. You workout because you want to get healthier and get a better physique. But workouts can be tough and there are days you only feel the pain and don't think progress is made. That's when you need to have faith that what you're doing is working. It might not be obvious but you'll be shocked by the difference between you now and what you had, say, a year ago. I have a friend who not only successfully lost weight but also became the most buffed guy I've ever known over the past 4 years. Imagine that kind of progress in your art when you practice every day for four years.
I remember when I first saw the trailer for this. Impossible to not get excited at the idea of a course that shows you all the tools you'll need directly from the people who have had such incredible careers. Really huge boon to have. I'm going to have to fight from saying "Yo Marvel" if I ever see them at a con.
A common theme I hear in a lot of the advice kinda boils down to "do the thing" crawl, walk, jog, run, sprint, 2.5K, 5K, 10K, Half-Marathon, Marathon. Every step forward is a step to the ultimate goal, but every step does matter. Even if it's just doodling circles while you watch tv. This course has been a lot of fun already, excited to see where it goes!
This course is fantastic so far, thank you Proko and Marvel for creating this! What an awesome panel:)
