I own an XP pen and it’s honestly pretty great. Not too expensive . I think you should watch recap or unboxing videos to help you decide.

I started drawing directly on tablet 'Huion Kamvas Pro 16' which has 15'' display, on-screen drawing, no parallax, I'm quite happy with it. It's also reasonably priced. If you want to go wild there are tablets up to 24'' or more out there, also mobile drawing computers (do not need PC/laptop connection) but those are really expensive in comparison. (e. g. MobileStudio Pro series from Wacom) Price was ~400 € (convert to your currency) including pen of course. A tablet does by the way not force you in any way to utilize any 'digital only' features. You can stick to as close to traditional art as you like, helped by the right software choice. Some focus very much on a realistic, traditional approach while others embrace digital-only means full-heartedly.

Dennis I have a Wacom Intuos Medium 2018 model. That works okay. I just can’t see how you can do it without one. You could step up to a Cintique,(direct to screen) but that is way more expensive and once you get used to the drawing tablet, it really doesn’t matter.

Asked for help
Hello Colin here. Just a request, if you get a contract job for Concept Art does it help to have some sort of business structure, like an Authorised Business Number,( as they do in my country (Australia)) , or is that totally unnecessary?

Hey Dennis! I thought I could help a bit with your question. Brad Colbow on YouTube reviews a lot of tablets and keeps a list of favs on his website. He seems to do a good job with reviewing products so I hope this helps.

I think @James Paris and @BansheeSquad have pretty much covered the subject. But I share my own experience that may be of some use to you. Living in a third world country, where everything is very expensive, I always have to buy by doing a lot of research and analysis of the products. At first I had a wacom bamboo, but I could never finish transferring my skills to digital because of the way of draw on the tablet but look at the monitor, now that Im traing to professionalais and with the encouragement of some colleagues, I decided to take the leap to the graphic monitors. If I had had the money I would buy the wacom cintiq without hesitation, but as I said before money is an issue so I investigated the Xpen and the Huion, after a week of investigation I ended up buying the Huion 22'. I am more than satisfied, in fact if i could I would not buy the cintiq anymore. Mainly because the Huion 22' (not plus) is a pure screen, without buttons (I use keyboard shortcuts), which makes it a large tablet but it doesn't take up so much space (I have a very large desk anyway). To resume, if you are in a low budget situation i recomend Huion brand over xpen (you can watch comparative youtube videos). something to note, maybe if you don't have a good computer, you could get a used Ipad pro, (although I don't like mac in general because of its policies) procreate is very good and you have a professional portable tablet. But well even used the ipad pro is more expensive than a huion tablet.

Hey ! First of all, it depends on your needs, space and equipment :) I would say that a classic drawing tablet ( Wacom/xp-pen etc. ) require a sturdy computer and some extra space on your desk If you have a slow computer, running digital painting programs like Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint could be a bit much for your machine. But if you think it can handle it, then i can recommend the Xp pen brand it's a pretty " new" brand with affordable tablets without sacrificing the quality too much BUT you must be prepared to have a little parallax on those ( Parallax is the gap between the physical tip of your pen and the pointer shown on the screen Here is an example : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R794BFdF7EA ) Pros : - Can be cheap, especially if you choose a tablet without a screen Cons : You need an "Okay-ish " computerfor it to work properly --- You have another option : "Phone Tablet " I don't know how to call them, but basically it's a big phone with a pen( Apple's Ipad for example ) They are not made specifically for drawing ( As you can take photos, video-chat people etc.) A friend of mine actually draws with a Samsung Galaxy Tab , and he says the feeling is really good. Pros : You can draw anywhere you want Cons : Can be pricey and I don't really know how far you can go with drawing progams on those tablets --- You can easily find rankings/advices for drawing tablet on youtube, i would suggest double checking whith those ressources

I would say getting a tablet is a pretty definite requirement for doing digital art. I'm sure folks will have their favorites, and pros and cons of different models, but really anything with a stylus and pressure sensitivity will get you going, so maybe research budget tablets and start with something that seems affordable.
