4yr
Andreas Huang
Hi all, glad Proko 2.0 is here and this is my first community post! I'm Andreas Huang, (aspiring--should i use that word?) character illustrator and designer based in Indonesia. I enjoy illustrate and design fantasy character (mostly humanoid) in pop-mythical theme Introducing my original character for my personal project---Mercure He's personification of word "Mercury" (all of the Mercury Roman god, the planet Mercury, and the Hg element). My design approach is through word brainstorming to extract visual ideas, and it all supporting a highly agile type of character. Any comments, constructive critiques are appreciated! and hey, lets connect in this new-born art platform if you enjoy my work :)

I really like the character concept sheet!

Hi, i really like the concept, especially the color scheme feels fresh and interesting to me. It definitly immediately recognizes as fast, good, super hero. The snakes are awesome! I am not a well educated artist, so please take my following comments just as some first impressions and of course just take what makes sense to you. In the illustration I was thinking maybe make the light rays a bit less opaque. Right now they draw a lot of attention and also lower the 'pop' of the character and the yellow snake. For the character himself: The messenger identy is not obvious. I don't know if you wanted that to be a main part or not, so you can decide if you want to add some kind of bag (or maybe something a bit more interesting, I just have no better idea right now ^^). The mercury part - I think you could be bolder with the liquid theme, maybe the suit he wears is more like a liquid second skin where the fast movement creates some splashes. I think it is really well designed and it is a very interesting character. Hope to see more in the future :)

Hi Andreas, nice work! I like that you've got a 'reference board' for your character, that's always an excellent idea. It looks like you've really put some thought into your design, and I think it could be even better if you did some 'lateral exploration'. The great designers will almost always put a good amount of effort into exploring different takes on a character. even doing just 3 or 5 sketches of different directions for your character can pay huge dividends, as your first idea is not always going to be your best idea! Here are some examples by Drew Wolf and I think Arnold Tsang(but I may be wrong) The work on the angel character Mercy here (from Overwatch) really goes to show just how different the directions for a character can be pushed, but some elements from each design pass can make their way into the final design. Also as we see in the Drew wolf piece, having your lateral explorations next to your final painting can look very nice as a presentation as well! Hope this helps and kkeep up the good work!
