@silentmoonss
Hello I’m back! I’ve been focusing on drawing portraits lately and I’m starting to see progress however the eyes are kicking my butt. I have a hard time separating the eyes into simple planes especially applying to my own portraits. Does anyone have any advice for this? Also here’s what I’ve worked on today I feel like the forehead should be a bit longer but not sure. Anyways hope for some feedback on what I can improve on
Hi @silentmoonss
portraits are super hard.
First, practice drawing and shading simple 3D forms: sphere, cone, cylinder, etc.
If you want to jump deeper, I suggest this exercise - set yourself three values and draw several portraits using only this range. Look at my quick sketch. Pay attention to the light in the references. To make your task easier, you can adjust the highlights and shadows of your reference in the application. Don't worry so much about the eyes, I think they look quite good at this stage.

Hi @silentmoonss, what was your goal with this piece? To copy accurately? To capture the expression? To create an interesting composition?
Cheers!
@silentmoonss Eyes are tricky especially at this angle. Maybe look up the Loomis method it looks like you have a good grasp at it from the eye drawings on the paper. Perhaps, it is a matter of shading? That always gets me as well the dichotomy of lights and darks can be tricky. Maybe think of the eye as just a sphere and block in the light and darks then put in the detail last.
