Your work is amazing! I would like to know how do you come with the composition for your work?

Thank you!! For me personally coming up with the composition is one of the most fun parts of making an image. I usually try to think of ways to direct the eye of the viewer throughout the image in a way that sequentially tells the story while trying to make it feel fluid/natural, but it doesn't always work out xD I have the cloud lady and mermaid pieces as example, I tried planning out where the focal points would be and the direction I wanted to lead people's eyes, and I think the best way to do that is by contrast! People naturally look at what has more contrast first (rather it be value, color, shape, edges etc) so if you plan out a hierarchy of contrast and execute it well you can achieve that! That said, I'm still working on it, I usually end up putting unecessary contrast all over the place xD

Wow! Those are so good. My favorite is the cloud with girl holding a jar.

Heya! Your works are downright gorgeous! Your control of colour, value, and composition is spectacular. I'm a sucker for a blue-green- orange colour pallete in artworks and that 3rd artwork is just simply *chef's kiss* Excited to connect with you too! ✨

Hi Davi, great illustrations! I really love the use of light in order to hype the composition: very well thinked and realized! And the storytelling is lovely as well :)

Hi Davi, your artworks are awesome. Love the storytelling and the colors. I think you can improve by use a little bit more of contrast and maybe a little bit more saturation in your colors.

Thank you! Totally! Coincidentally I've recently noticed I have the tendency of making colors a bit muddy/dessaturated and been a bit more conscious of it, sometimes it's just so hard to see these things after working on an image for so long xD Thank you for the suggestion!!

Asked for help
Gosh, they're gorgeous! i really like your clean rendering. sorry, i'm the one who asking question here.. :) this is a portion of my illustration... i've been struggling with sloppy brushwork.. Davi what would you do to achieve your clean look of rendering? many thanks..
Andreas Huang
Thank you @Davi Lo and @Joe Zavaletta for the help.. Ah yeah, i think using roundish brush with opacity controlled by pen pressure ticked on is the factor. Noted it for my further works

Hi Andreas! Thank you for the compliments! You got yourself a really nice WIP yourself! I think that if you want to achieve a more realistic look to the texture of the skin you could try knocking down a bit of the brushwork and blending the transitions of the form so the nice sharper edges are used for abrupt plane changes (like the one you have with the eyelid and forehead). I personally like the suggestion @Joe Zavaletta gave of using smudge tools to achieve soft natural transitions, I also use a lot of the lasso tool to get crisp hard edges! I guess in terms of the texture part, having a good reference photo and being able to accurately translate it into your painting is a big help! Tbh I don't think I'm very proficient with rendering, but I hope it helps somehow!
Joe Zavaletta
Hey Andreas, nice WIP you've got going. For starters, it looks like you're using a round brush with a low opacity rather than a low flow. A low opacity simply changes how opaque the color is, whereas flow changes how much "paint" comes out of the brush. I like to work with a lower flow to achieve smoother renderings. Also, don't be ashamed to use the smudge or blur tool, or the soft brush for those nice gradated transitions!

Hi Davi, well done! I really like the second illustration you posted, as well as the design of the crab island. In the first one, the one with the naga, I would have applied shadows more sharply, especially on the rocks: it seems to me that the light suggests a setting sun, so the shadows should be sharper, even on the naga's body. You've done a good job of suggesting the Naga's scales without overdoing the detail. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Thank you! Yeah, the naga one was a bit tricky, I actually wanted to try applying a more soft gradation of the light, didn't want the transition to be too sharp, but maybe I overdid it lol Thank you for the suggestion though! :)
