Gesture Poses
11mo
Blake Pawlikowski
I haven't done any gesture drawings since college (20ish years) and gave the timed session tool a try this evening. Loved it! I did 5 - 2 minute poses, a 5 minute pose and a 10 minute pose. Even though I felt rushed/clumsy and not thrilled with the output, I decided that posting here for accountability and feedback was a good way to stay engaged /consistent.
If anyone has feedback or suggestions, would love to hear it. Thanks!
Hi @Blake Pawlikowski i like your poses that you have choose, but try to give more dynamism to the poses, using the action lines, you must try to follow the flow of the line. My advice to you is to EXAGERATE the curves, the important thing is not that it is 100% anatomically correct but to express an energy. by the way they looks good keep it up :)
It's fun to do the timed pose drawings, one thing to keep in mind is less is more. Meaning finding the rhythm of the pose is a better starting point. You might try larger format newsprint where you can sweep in the gesture pencil marks in one stroke. Think of the letters C, R, K and I for the figure to fit in (see LOOMIS). Measuring using the size of the Head as a basis for the rest of the body. Stan does a great job describing how the figure looks like a bean shape and provides you with excellent procedures in his lessons. And as always make time to draw, draw, draw along with Stan's lesson's will ultimately improve your output.
Hiiiii!!!!! I absolutely adore your artwork, and frankly, I wish I can be that good of an artist. My issue? I don't do it often enough like I should to do things that well, and I have to be in "the right mindset" to be able to pull it off. However, that doesn't stop me from learning. I would love it if you can show me step by step (videos are no help. I have to ping pong between the captioning and the steps you go through to get the best results, and this is one of the downside of deafness :(, unfortunately.), but I commend you for taking the time and patience to create artwork this well. Keep it up!
After watching Stan's video on rhythms...I think some of these don't adhere to how he approaches gestures. I'll try to revisit sometime using the rhythm and approach he describes.
