I don't think gouache is an alternative, as it is opaque. Acrylic springs to mind, possibly using an medium to extend its open time. Acrylics dry fast in comparison with oils, though: it needs some practice to get used to it.

I see what you mean. Hmm yeah I guess i agree in the sence that acrylics can be layered kinda the same way as oils i some cases
I know some schools teach gouache as a precursor to oil. It's rather different in nature, but it's good training since it forces you to make decisive painting and rendering choices, while also being more cost efficient. Gouache has its own learning curve as well, but I think it's quite worth the effort given its usefulness and versatility. Best of luck :)
Hi everyone so I need help figuring out a substitute for my oils. Let me clear this out, so I paint with oils but I wan't another painting medium that will also help me improve my oilpainting skills at the same time. Is Guache a good option? If yes why? Cause I been thinking about Goache and watercolours mainly beacause I cant think about any other medium (I think about theese mediums beacause in my mind I can do a painting faster and after I've done the painting in this medium I can decide if I want to do a oilpainting of it). Any tips and advice will be really appreciatied. Kind regards Jonathan
