Master Study - Karl Kopinski
Karls lines appear chaotic and searching which adds a lot of charm but, after studying his work, they’re purposeful and demonstrate intuitive understanding of line weight, perspective and anatomy. Attempting to emulate the “wobbly” lines I began to understand that they all denote something. Whether it’s a fold in clothes, wrinkles in skin or fur on a creature.
I came away from this study really appreciating all the years of work it must have taken to get to this level of understanding. During the study I began to step back from just copying the line direction and weight to look at what I’m drawing and ask “where is this line going” “how does it contribute to the image” and in general why am I drawing the line in the first place. If nothing else, it’s helped me examine line as I’m working to better understand its importance in the image.
I would love to hear anyone else thoughts and criticisms on my study.

Had a lot of fun with this, I'm a level 1 learner but wanted to give the level 2 a try as drawing from imagination is where I want to be.
I tried to merge the raven as a character with mech components which was an enjoyable experience. I'll definitely be doing this again with only the creature as a reference after watching the demos to see where I can improve on my linework. Getting consistant and confident lines was a struggle due to the detail of the creature (using line to differentiate between small feathers, fur, larger feathers etc)
Coming back to this post to upload after watching the demos to compare and see where improvements have been made.

Very cool exploration and idea. Your notes on the feather patterns are cool to see. You could also find reference for the raven's skeleton to study and get an idea of how thing work under the hood. It'll give you more freedom to explore different poses and actions the more structural understanding you develop.

Really enjoyed this project, found underdrawing with a 2H gave me the freedom to make those mistakes and use tapered strokes over the lines I liked and left out the ones that didn't look to fit. Would appreciate any feedback!

First attempt at the CSI snail and boots
Would appreciate any feedback or critique. Really struggled with this one and stopped at the boots as I was conscious this is supposed to be a quick exercise. I was taking a lot of time and just didnt know where to put the next lines even with the reference material in front of me. The drawings are similar but the perspective and shape are off. I found myself focusing on the details (like the shoelaces) and getting lost and discouraged.
I'd also really appreciate any tips or advice on how to improve at this point.

You’re working very tightly here. Your strokes are dark and short, and it looks like you are going over the strokes multiple times. It may not feel very natural but try using lighter, longer strokes. Draw from your elbow rather than your wrist. Practice drawing like this without any expectations for a few drawings. Then try to integrate it into your boot drawing with the laces. Coming back to it might trigger an Ah Ha moment since you’ve had a bit of time to digest what you’ve learned in the first attempt.

First attempt on pear #2.
Would appreciate any feedback. The drawing feels 2 dimensional to me and I struggled to break down the values to give the image depth and bring the planes out. The shading also isn’t very full where I think I might need to take more care sanding the pencil into more of a bullet to get an even finish.
First attempt on pear #3 after watching demo.
Happier with this one as it shows more planes by using the tip of the pencil and taking more time with shading.
Need to improve on the overall shape as mine is more upright than the reference and also work on shading confidence to get the planes more in focus and more even.
