Hey Ruben, newsprint is pretty popular so its strange that they don't sell it. A bit more expensive alternative is bond or bleedproof. The main thing is that its smooth. Really smooth.
Ruben Blanco
i know right? it's weird but they really don´t sell it here (Chile), same with conte pencils, but thanks for the suggestion.

hi! i'll keep it short. In my country art stores don´t sell newsprint paper pads to practice with charcoal and shipping is too expensive. Do you guy know of an alternative paper to practice with?
Ruben Blanco
Do you recommend starting with gouache first or jumping straght to oil painting?

Hi guys proko and the watts atelier recommend the Conte 1710B for their courses, but I live in Chile and I can't get it here and shipping is too expensive. Do you guys know of a good alternative to the Conte?

I think it depends on how much time you have to draw/paint. If you feel like you have the time to get enough drawing in to get the point of the course and then some - go ahead, I think Yiming Wu is making a good point and cross training is a good thing :)) However, if painting now means that you can't make the time to draw, I would wait a little longer seeing as you have a source of critiques on the drawing, probably not the painting. Besides, if you form bad habits by starting to paint on your own, you might take longer than starting fresh with great guidance.

Yeah I see your point. Thanks of the answer!

Hi guys! i'm taking the Watts Atelier online course and i wanted to know if its wise to tart with painting while i learn how to draw following the course? (i already know how to draw a bit from before, i just wanted to learn the fundamentals better). I ask this because the course is long and it will take a while before i reach the oil painting part of it. Thanks in advance and i hope my question is clear.

If you want to get started with fundamentals I would highly recommend starting with Fundamentals of Figure Drawing it will help you develop a good understanding of Form and basic Perspective. For a good introduction to perspective, Marshall has a 12 video course on his website.(https://marshallart.com/SHOP/all-products/all-videos/1994-perspective-drawing-series/) Otherwise you could learn a lot from ModernDayJames's Perspective Series on Youtube.(https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-YQfqQQpg3dFq5rxS9eFFf2ksMb7Ygpq) If you want to learn how to use primitive shapes to indicate form and draw almost anything with a bit of introduction to design, Concept Design Academy has Dynamic Sketching which i found to be extremely helpful. Composition and Values are the next step after form and perspective. For light and shadow - Dorian Iten's Course is the best one I know of. For composition - (I haven't personally gone through this one) Bill Perkin's Course on NMA is very comprehensive But for a brief introduction check out (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg-So3ElA8g) I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you for the great answer! I'll check some of your suggestions.

Hi guys as the title says im trying to build up my fundamentals (Perspective, Composition, Values, Form, etc.). I was wondering what course will help me with this. Or should i try something else?
Ruben Blanco
Hi!. You could try to draw the foot as a simple shape with the correct perspective first and then put in the details

Yeah, this is a good suggestion. I believe the primary problem is that in your reference image the left foot is planted flat and you’ve got it angled as if he’s on the ball of his foot. Try to nail down the “floor plane” of the foot and go from there. I think once you get the angle down, you’ll be able to nail the anatomy.
