I had a hard time deciding on a reference to use, but I remembered always being struck by some of the character illustrations in the Sandman. I did some searching and found a couple panels; the first is by Sam Kieth and the second is by Mike Dringenberg. I definitely struggled with replicating the lines in these. The hair in the horizontal panels were especially challenging for me.

Tried all 3 linear drawings before watching the videos. The penguin was fun, but thought I had a lot of trouble with the hand. After watching the videos, I actually think my VR girl turned out to have the most issues - I paid too much attention to the small contours. I went back and tried that one again, trying to improve on staying loose and using rhythms to improve line quality instead of focusing on the contours.

Tried the CSI assignment before watching the demo/critiques. The boots took a long time for me and it was overwhelming to try and get all the lines in the laces.

Here's the second attempt after watching the videos. I focused a lot less on precise shapes and details and really tried to improve on line quality. Boots were faster the second time around, more floppy but with lines that were cleaner and sort of confident. I was surprised at the improvement in the snail.

First steps with the drawing basics course. Tried the pear before watching demo and critiques, then tried to improve after watching. Tried to get more consistent values, use more range of values, get rid of outlines, and generally internalize some of the key lessons. Hopefully they're steps in the right direction.

You definitely improved your values in the second attempt, going for stronger shadows to make the image look more dynamic! I would say that the shadow side is still too small though, it doesn’t take up as much space as in the picture. And the light side is too light, it doesn’t leave enough room for the highlights to be visible. That’s just my thoughts, though. I’m hardly an expert.
