Sterling, I like your recommendation of seeing a version of treating the figures into the ground plane, with the same value. I also enjoy the mystery of seeing a hint of the characters', but not their full form.
Now I can see this can be stretched a lot father, but I'll leave these as they are. For now.

Struggle with the separation/contrast; gravitate to the mid tones…2nd simplified version; think I need to put a time limit on myself😁

Time limits can help, for sure! These small exercises and all the minor exercises shouldn't take more than an hour. (What I mean to say is that you shouldn't spend more than an hour- like all art, they can always take all the time we will give them!)
It was an interesting image for this exercise we chose. I enjoy the sketch lines, stylized version of yours! :)

Find myself in other areas of the house doing small works on paper…studio gets used for large supports, photography. Accumulation of reference books, supports, supplies, works etc; occasionally organize, reuse supports. Tall ceiling allows for umbrella diffusers/lighting; Wishlist dedicated drawing table.

I wish that for you, as well! Funny story, my current art table came from a former student. I'm not sure where you are located @C P but I see a lot of drafting tables on Facebook marketplace. Sometime people are just giving them away. Nice work on your values and setup in the sketch.
"The Guardian"
A war broke out between mankind, resulting in a large stone warrior to retaliate and bring peace to the world - that war has now long since passed and now a lone Giant Mantis Warrior explores the long dormant Colossus who is merely sleeping, waiting to see if he is needed again.
Adobe Photoshop CC 2021, used ink and watercolor brushes that appear realistic; feel and look inspired by Daoist paintings of the 13-15th century.
