Hello, I've tried doing the portrait project. Any comments to improve this one will be appreciated. Thank you.

There is not a lot of contrast in your lighter values. I would recommend darkening that side of the cheekbone by the left side of the face. In the picture, it tapers off into a darker plane. If you've watched the critique video, Stan makes an egg analogy. With an egg, the farther you get away from the top of the light source on the egg, the darker it gets. So what's facing up will be light and what's facing down will be dark. The bottom part of that cheekbone, is facing down. You lightly indicated that, but a little darker values will create a good change. I would also darken (only slightly) by the brow bone, so that little light on his upper brow bone really pops. Hope this helps! :)

Hello, I'm still new here. I tried to do the first project for the drawing course. This is my progress before and after watching the critic video. I wasn't able to watch the demo video because I'm only using the free version of the course. I Wanna ask for inputs on improving this one. Thanks.

Hi, welcome to the course! I would recommend trying out harder edges, as right now the pear appears rather soft and hazy when it comes to its value group borders--though the shapes themselves are well simplified. And while it may partly be the pencil or lighting, I would try pushing for more value contrast, especially by pushing the dark end of the range. That way, there is more visible difference between your value steps. It helps to build up the value by layering with your pencil, especially to reach the darkest values, or you could try out different gradations of pencils (HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, for example) as well. Hope this helps!
