Here are my NOTAN Master studies. I tried to stay with 2 values plus the “white” of the page but by Rembrandt, I was going into 3 values plus “white.”

This is level 1. I drew on Borden & Riley #280 paper, which has some texture (“tooth”.) The first row is graphite, #s 2H, 2B, and 4B. I love graphite pencils, colored pencils, and ballpoint pen. The second and third rows are ballpoint pen, which is unforgiving on this paper but I tried anyway. Line didn’t work well at all so I tried scrumbling (is that a word?) Still, the lighter values are really difficult with this combination so I used a Staedtler Mars plastic eraser with the dirty bits shaved off to remove some ink in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th values in the third row
