I tried to be loose with my approach for this project so that it could help me push the shape design to an almost breaking point to help me avoid stiffness and aim for dynamism instead. Looking back I definitely could've been a lot looser with my sketches so as to allow the lines to be flowier and really exaggerate the shapes.

Bubbles were a nice touch, they go with the flow of the drawings.

This is my drawing of the musketeer. I took extensive amounts of measurements and would constantly compare my drawing with the photo. But when it came time to overlay my drawing on the photo I realized that everything was thrown off. The hat didn’t have the proper proportions and I had also placed it a little bit lowered than it needed. As a result, it threw off the entire drawing by causing the face and shoulder details to be placed lower than they should have been and skewing towards the left side. This made me realize that before I move on to adding details, it’s a good idea to walk away from my drawing for a bit and come back with fresh eyes so I can retake measurements and compare my drawing to the photo to see if I can spot areas that may look or feel wrong and adjust them accordingly.

"before I move on to adding details, it’s a good idea to walk away from my drawing for a bit" A great lesson to learn!

This one was really fun. I stayed with the hippo so far, but might do the other animals as well.
@ericknunez
Awesome hippo designs! The shapes are really cool and expressive! Their designs shown from different up and down angles shows an understanding of the subject and gives them an appealing perspective!

Level 2 assignment. There are so many possibilities about lions to explore, I just took a small portion. Critiques free.
@ericknunez
Amazing shape designs for the lions! I really like the references you used and how you used them to create your own unique and expressive shapes! I also really like both bottom right lions showing a lot of personality!

Identifying a weakness is crucial in overcoming it. Red- Level 1 Blue - Level 2
@ericknunez
The shape variations on every animal looks amazing! Each animal has their own shape language that is very well captured and shows different personalities, especially with the crocodile and the alpaca!

This one was a bit tricky and I'm not really sure if I hit the mark on this one. In the beginning I was trying to come up with interesting shape designs and it was kind of difficult and that's probably because I kept overthinking it. After a while I let myself experiment with organic shapes that didn't really made any sense until I added facial features of a raccoon. Looking back I think my number one critique would be to exaggerate the organic shapes even more.

Finally finished the rhinos for the project!

What a fun assignment! I love history and dogs. So i wanted to create a "royalty" portrait of a prussian general basset hound :). Did some studies of dogs and pike helmets. Plus some iterations of the portrait.
@ericknunez
Awesome sketches! I really the quality of the lines you used and the creative liberties you took to exaggerate the more important and captivating qualities of your subject.

Exactly the project I need to do. One of my drawing goals is to produce the kinds of concepts that I want to sculpt. Keep putting this off, but need to start somewhere. Boar exploration, last idea of first page reminded me of pitbulls. Pushed that a bit, but lost the thing I liked about the simpler base. Finished with Staedtler leadholder and mechanical on paper
@ericknunez
Amazing job exploring the shapes and likeness of the boar! I really like the concepts and sketches in the second picture.
@ericknunez
This is my sketch for the Level 2 assignment. Not only was it fun to do but it was also fun to see all of the submissions! The creature I choose was called a flying Gecko and after stumbling upon it I went straight to sketching and gathering helpful references of the gecko. I had done lots of sketches but I choose to condense it in order to show my process a lot smoother.
