These are from the previous two lectures, so far it's all been easy to understand save for just two things. 1- I'm having a hard time gauging the tilt line, since I'm drawing traditionally it's not easy to trace over the reference and get a feel for the directionality of the head, but I'm sure with time I'll be able to get a handle on it (I also plan on moving to digital so I suppose this is a temporary issue) 2- The issue of jaw length depending on the pose of the head, that also seems to depend on how frequently I try and practice these methods. All in all, these steps are extremely helpful to keep mind of since they at least inform me while I'm trying to draw a head as opposite as to just going with what I feel is the next step.
@casildius
Here's my attempt, at first I was just being loose and unfocused, but I decided to focus a bit more towards the end. I'm gonna assume the chest portion is wrong, especially the end points of the ribcage. My main concern is the distance between the hip and ribcage, length of the legs, and that they are appropriately sized. Also another question, do you have a lesson or YouTube video where you show how to draw a front view of the figure? I have an idea of how the S C and straight lines can be used to draw from the front but I'd like to see if you tackled it. Plus I've heard from other artists that even from from neutral positions (without directionality) bodies still have gesture to them, do you tackle this as well in some other video? Much appreciated Prof, Cas.
Michael Hampton
Hey, nicely done! And yes. I do have one for the front. Here's a link https://youtu.be/a21_BFl2n14

I'm likely going to revise this lecture since I was exhausted prior to starting it, as for the drawing I think the legs and the distance between the hips and chest are clearly the most erring (do add any observations if I messed any else) I understand the approach, you're laying down the gesture lines and then adding shapes to better place the anatomy in later stages ( if I'm correct) But is it possible to do just the gesture lines and immediately begin filling in the details of the body? If so do you demonstrate that in later lectures or know any artist which does what I've described? Also here is the picture of my attempt
Michael Hampton
I'm sure there are artists that lay in the gesture and then go right to details, unfortunately I'm not aware of any. And, no, I don't do that later on. You can, however, check out the rendering videos. Those might have more of what you're looking for.
@casildius
These are very messy, but I understand the underlying concepts. My question is however is separate. I don't wish to underplay the importance of these exercises or fundamentals, but I find myself wanting to move on to form construction, gesture and anatomy since I've done those to a good degree. What would be your advice? I know these are never really mastered but I also don't want to neglect them but I've found myself wanting to move to your lessons on form construction and more in-depth gesture lectures since I've watched some of your content on YouTube and have a few gesture drawings that I drew alongside your videos. If need be I can share some of those gesture drawings for you to gauge where I am and better advise me. Besides that, I love your method of teaching and looking forward to the rest of this course.
Michael Hampton
These are fine. Yes, I think it's important you follow your interests. Jump ahead to the next videos, you can always circle back to these underlying concepts if you see them lacking.
