Portrait painting
Been focusing on painting portraits for the last month. My goal is to try to go for a more painterly style, working from big to small and attempting to design my shapes. Any feedback to help me improve is always appreciated. Thank you.

Here are my submission for critique. I felt the first couple were not very good trying to follow along and maintain a painterly style. On the later ones I mixed some techniques to help paint the portraits better. I also decided to render them just a little more other than a rough painterly style. I wouldn’t mind trying to figure out how to design and paint the shapes so they have more appeal. Any critiques are welcome.

Additionally, if you would like the characters to be more similar to the reference, also work on the angles of construction. This trick works very well for me. Even slight differences are quite noticeable to the human eye. I hope I helped at least a bit. Best regards!

Hi Bil, I believe your painting skills are fine. To improve the drawing, I would suggest focusing on values (light and shadow) now. If you don't want to use edited references, at least for self-check, I recommend a quick test at the end with a background change. See how immediately it becomes apparent that the lost edges are incorrect (highlighted section in the jpg).

Here are some of my 5 minute paintings. I really like the repetition of his lessons. I feel doing a bit of self critique between them helps. I find hair to be very difficult. Critiques are welcome.

Hey Bill! Great job on these, these are coming along. You're getting a hang of the concepts that Ahmed is teaching. What I'd say is a few things. Your edges, values, overall shapes, and drawing could use some work. To start with #5 30 minutes, the silhouettes of the shapes don't quite feel like "fruit". It feels more like a 2d shape right now, that resembles fruit. What you can do is make the drawing a bit more accurate, as well as being more intentional with your overlaps. The second thing I'd say is that your colors could be more saturated / varied and your values could go a bit wider. I'd recommend looking at David Cheifetz's paintings linked below. In yours, the shapes and colors are almost there but there's a lack of variety and subtle in yours that makes it way less convincing. Looking at David's he has a lot of texture, and a a wide variety of colors while also having clear definite shapes. To fix this in yours, I'd say is watch @Morgan Weistling's video How to Draw Like a Painter. In it he talks about the importance of focusing on your drawing before anything else. Once you have a solid drawing, the "painting" side of it takes care of itself.

Thanks for the response Kristian. After taking a break for a couple of days, looking back on them they don’t have that 1 2 3 read that Ahmed is talking about. They also feel very flat and washed out, like they lost form from the wireframe. I’m going to work on repainting some of them to see how to improve the form and vibrancy. Thank you.

This is my assignment for painting basic shapes in the Med’s Map course.. The assignment was to paint the same object repeatedly within a time limit. Any critique or feedback is appreciated. Also wouldn’t mind any advice on efficiently painting within a time limit, such as how to effectively capture shape and form. I try to use a checklist which I think helps but don’t think I was successful in getting the big shapes to read in the final painting.

Here are my submissions for the assignment for the MedCube. I’m still working on the floating cube but just found out I was painting on the wrong layer. So now the underdrawing and perspective grid are mixed in with the paint. Any critiques or feedback for improvement is appreciated.

I wish there was a bit more guidance with the photoshop use. I'm pretty lost as to which brushes to use like yeah I downloaded them but which is useful for what :/

Im using the hard round for the linework, the soft airbrush for the rendering and using his flat textured brush for the painterly style. Hope that helps.

Nose and eye study
Here’s a nose and eye study. Tried to push the perspective by blurring the far eye. The skin is dark and most of the face was in shadow was fairly challenging but I’m hoping the form and structure still reads. Any comments or critiques are welcome.

Second eye study
Another digital eye study in Procreate. I took Steve’s advice from the the last one. I thought of the structure and pushed the values to try to create more depth. Any feedback is appreciated.

Hey Bill, This is a very nice drawing, your control over your values is pretty good. If you want to push yourself a little, start thinking about the structure under the eye and it's surroundings. I did a very crude paint-over of your eye to kind of show you what I mean. I didn't use any reference so it's not perfect. I darkened areas that would be in shadow because of the brow and the socket it is sitting in. Sometimes the reference is so Photoshoped and processed that everything looks kind of slick and flat. Also, pay attention to the pupil, it's kind of counter intuitive, but the pupil is lighter across from the highlight because its actually a bowl shape. Anyway, I hope this helps :)
