Day 1-3 of gesture drawing. This is my 3rd time attempting this class, but I'm striving hard not quit this time. On Day 1, I used the same poses as Proko. I also followed along with Rams comics gesture drawings, which are the Iron Manesque drawings at the bottom. I think my favorite drawings though were the ones I did at the end of the day. I didn't care anymore if it looked good and did quick gestural drawings (normally I send several minutes on a single gesture) and neck anatomy studies based off a video. Day 2: I just did the bean and gesture drawings. I used the Proko video to correct my gestures after I first attempted them on my own. Day 3: More gesture drawings. At the end of the day, I did a more detailed rendering of the neck anatomy study from Day 1. I also tried to examine the angles/relationship between the neck and the collar bones. Then, I just did body (trunk) studies from imagination just to test how much I recalled. The placement and position of breasts still confuses me, but honestly, those end-of-day freeform studies encourage me to keep going after the disastrous gesture drawings make me question if I have any skill at all lol.

I don't see anything disastrous here! These are good progressions. Keep exploring these ideas, the more quick gesture studies you can get behind you the better.

I’m pushing myself to draw faces. I started with the eyes and decided to just keep going. Yet, it feels as if the face is too long. The shape also seems off. Any advice on how to fix it? Are the features in the wrong place or is the chin too elongated? Or is it something else?

Here are my Mickey Mouse hands. I used poses from photo reference, and tried to turn them into Mickey Mouse hands on my own.

Looks splendid! I thought they were drawn referencing actual Mickey Mouse hand gestures until I read your post. Amazing job.

Perspective is one of the fundamentals I struggle with the most. I never really learned anything beyond one-point perspective. So, this exercise is very challenging/frustrating for me. The rectangles are wrong, but I can't tell how to fix them. And my cylinder of the medicine bottle is too wide at the top, but that's how wide it looked to me, so I also need to train my eye. Or maybe, the top cylinder's size isn't the issue but the cross contours beneath are? I'm challenging myself to complete every assignment though, so here is my work.

Not certain which level I'm on, so I did level 1. It's my first time painting fruit digitally. I plan to come back and do level 2 as well.

Casually did my circles while listening to David Finch explain gesture drawing. I’m not certain if it’s wise to be studying both anatomy and the fundamentals at once, but here are my circles next to an anatomy quick sketch I did. I’ve taken figure drawing before, but I want to be able to create my own characters or accurate fan art. So, I’ve decided to come back to the basics to fill the gaps in my knowledge and not give up this time. Excited for this course, Stan! Your lessons are a source of encouragement.

I have been holding off on doing that anatomy ... but this is maybe not a bad idea...

I can see this exercise being beneficial when I progress to the figure drawing course. To ease into drawing, I want my first marks of a session to be playful and free from expectation. This exercise meets this criterion, but there is also an opportunity here for more consequential practice. I began page 1 with random marks and shapes, since this is how I normally begin my warmup sessions; it represents how it might look if I actually incorporate the exercise into my routine. I did use a reference to redraw the rotating figures on page 2, as the original proportions were somewhat embarrassing.

These are beautifully done. I even cracked up at the old man. Great grasp of character, proportion and foreshortening.

These were pretty fun! Working through multiple courses, so it took longer than expected. Tried to simulate permanence but ctrl z is a crippling addiction. Added some spheres for extra variety!

Wow that is REALLY well done. Great grasp of perspective.
