Follow the steps below to practice generating ideas for your project using the ideation process discussed in the video.

  • Prepare Your Materials:
    • Gather a stack of blank cards or paper and a pen or pencil.
    • Ensure you have a quiet workspace or studio to focus.
    • Optional: Keep a sketchbook or phone handy for recording spontaneous ideas throughout the day.
  • Start with Questions:
    • Write down a list of questions about your project. Focus on what you need to figure out, such as themes, materials, or methods.
    • Ask questions like: "What do I want this project to look like?", "How can I execute this idea?", or "What new techniques can I try?"
  • Generate Ideas:
    • Using your cards or paper, quickly jot down or sketch any ideas that come to mind.
    • Don’t focus on quality—simple, rough sketches or notes are fine. The goal is to capture as many ideas as possible.
    • Let one idea lead to another through free association. Be open to unconventional or impractical thoughts.
  • Draw from Experience:
    • Think about memories, past projects, or techniques you’ve seen other artists use.
    • Consider how those experiences can inspire or inform your current project.
