Assignment

Stage 3: Finishing a drawing is a part of the process that tests the quality of all of the other stages. The design and the values and transitions are getting refined and subtle and can risk to lose their sense of structure. It is for this reason that we will stick to applying the fundamental lessons that were described in the first two stages but in a tighter way. The shapes we will use to describe to planes of the features should stay distinct and unified. Your assignment in this moment of the drawing is to assess the big picture. Are the shadows and lights distinct from each other? Are the edges of your halftone shapes soft enough? Is the hierarchy of values organized so that the lightest planes appear to be filled with light? These are the questions that we will have to answer in this final stage.

@Stephen Bauman Hi, would it be possible for you to share a hi-res image of this particular artwork you have done in this demo. I would like to see the strokes and marks on the paper that will help me visualize your approach better.
Amanda Rutledge
My finished portrait drawing. I could have taken more time on softening transitions, and more time in the hair, but for the time I spent on this I believe I pushed my experience up quite a bit.

Hi Amanda! Amazing work here! I like it a lot! Here are some notes on the drawing using the attached image for reference to notes. A. These areas look a bit too light in value and when I squint down at the image of the drawing or when I see the image as a tiny little pic on my screen that area pops out to me. Easy fix is to ad a bit more value to push it down. B. This area can use a bit more reflective light (fill light) to bring a balance of the values against the A area but leaving the darker shadow edge (core shadow) around the A area. I would just pull a tiny bit of value out. Very tiny bit. C. This area can use a darker value to show the plane change clearer just under her lip and core shadow wrapping around her chin. D. These three edges look too hard edged and grab my attention. They compete with the texture in the hair. I'd soften the edges and smooth them out and then the soft smooth skin will contrast with the hair texture better I feel. These are easy changes to make if you decide to do so. I hope it makes sense. It's a great drawing and looks BEAUTIFUL!

I feel like there is squint in right eye, its directed medially. I haven't seen the reference picture so I am not sure what I said is true.
