Seems like Tom Petty should have been an easy one, but it wasn’t as easy as I thought.

Hey there! I think you ended up at a good (and really fun) resemblance. If there's anything I might suggest, I might push the length of his nose further until it's pushing down on the mouth area (if we're thinking about the face like a lump of clay with mass to distribute around) since it sticks out to me as a prominent feature and you already have the mouth region clustered low. You could also push the proximity of his eyes and eyebrows together, as even in the picture they appear grouped together in shadow as the brow bone protrudes forward.

This is a pretty rough sketch. Igot this idea sponaniously when browsing through my Music albums. So I tried to capture my thought s as fast as possible. My intention was to emphasize the upper part of the head and the lower lip while reducing the length and size of the nose. The details have to be adapted of course but I think I can go on with this sketch

Ok. I see what you’re saying. I went back and took some more time to study the “average” head and compare it to him. So I changed my exaggerations to try and fit the slight differences I was able to find in his face and after a few attempts I came out with this one, which I feel is a step in the right direction. So thanks everyone.

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate the help. Does anyone have any recommendations for what to exaggerate or better ways to push the exaggeration without losing the likeness? I found that is one thing that is giving me trouble, when I push the exaggeration I completely lose the likeness.

The forehead looks good, but your jaw line from the temples to the chin is a nice circular curve, where on the photo, he has almost a straight line from his temple to his jaw, and then another straight line from his jaw to chin. This makes him look chubby and not so thin. In addition, his mustache is much closer to his upper lip. Hope this helps. Keep it up..
