Assignment

Stage 2: “Do it right, or do it twice.” This is the idea that I try to keep in mind when I am progressing through the stages of a painting. Patience and consistency is what we focus on in this 2nd phase of the color block in.

  1. This second video continues the block in phase of the painting. Due to the drying of the oil paint in between sessions the beginning of the video features a quick lesson about oiling out a painting- an essential skill for an oil painter.
  2. It is also the first moment where we get to see the entire context of the painting. Color, as we understand it in painting, is all about the context. One color cannot be “correct,” without all of the other colours around it. This first moment of see the whole painting in color for the first time is a moment for reflection on the choices we have taken up until this point. It is highly recommended that you stay flexible with regard to your choices, the first guess often isn’t the most correct.

Stonehenge from Legion paper. I usually like the warm white but all the shades are pretty good.
