Appealing Light

Assignment!

76

Use the reference provided in the introduction to this lesson OR search and collect your own reference images of lighting that YOU feel are good lighting scenarios. (recommended)

As shown in the video, create a checkerboard egg and illuminate it based on each reference.Do this for 15 to 30 of these lighting studies on eggs.

HARD MODE
Instead of just black and white “squares”, try the same process with the squares colored as RGB or CMY. It'll be fun!

EPIC MODE
Design an egg based on a Fabergé egg, and light it in three interesting ways based on reference. You're also welcome to mix and match different lighting scenarios!

Oh man, this is completely different from what I expected! I totally thought that the checkerboard pattern itself was supposed to represent an appealing value structure for a portrait. XD

Sorry about the image quality, I'm not sure why it came out so bad. By far my favorite assignment. I started on the background first for all of them to make sure my values wouldn't be messed up in later stages. I used the 'Multiply' layer for my values and 'Overlay' for colors. Sometimes I would add an 'Add (Glow)' layer for special occasions like #12. Then I would touch it up with a normal layer by adding gradients and strong rim lights when needed to really get the form to read. I struggle the most with ambient light. I had similar issues with ambient light when painting real faces in lesson 11 so any advice with how to tackle that would be really appreciated. Critiques always welcome
