Hey, @Dennis Yeary, I think @Martha Muniz summed it up pretty neatly! Maybe I can just complement by sharing a bit about my own experience. I started using Procreate on an iPad Air + Apple Pencil about a year ago, and I have no regrets (except that it took away a portion of my savings). In the past, I’ve tried drawing on my phone using the phone version of Procreate, but it didn’t work well because the screen is just too small for me, even for just sketching, and I never found a very good phone-friendly stylus (and I find that drawing with my finger on a tiny phone screen is simply a pain). Before using an iPad, I was only able to do digital art when I was in my studio. I used to do all my digital artwork on a desktop computer + drawing tablet (in my case, an iMac and a Cintiq 13” display), and, when I was on-the-go, I only carried a traditional sketchbook. When I got my iPad, I expected it would sort of replace my sketchbook (because it’s portable, so I’d do more digital sketching) and that I’d keep doing the same amount of the more developed artwork on my desktop computer. But, curiously, the opposite happened: now, I find myself using my computer less and doing a bunch of my more developed artwork on the iPad, while 99% of my sketches are still done on my old traditional sketchbook. There’s something about sketching on paper that, to me, the best digital device just can’t match yet. Hope my testimonial can help you in any way. If you happen to find any other interesting options for digital drawing pads in your search other than the ones Martha mentioned here, please feel free to share your findings with us!

The most common mobile tool I see people use for digital art is iPad + Apple Pencil + Procreate, as it's a really competent and versatile app that's easy to work with and convenient on the go. I don't have much experience with it personally, so hopefully someone else can chime in, but that's what I hear most recommended by far. Another thing I've seen artists use is their everyday laptop + a small pen tablet, so if you have a laptop but no iPad and are on a budget, this could also be a good option. Wacom is the standard, reliable brand, Intuos for a more specific tablet, but there are other brands like Huion and XP-Pen (I can personally vouch for XP-Pen, having also tried Wacom) that are more budget-friendly and get the job done.
