Reilly Method
3yr
Crystal Blue (she/her)
i just started learning the Reilly method, since I feel like my proportions have been off lately. How am I doing so far? I feel pretty confident on the front view, but I think the 3/4 view looks weird.
Also, any advice for how I should practice this method to memorize it?
Hello, although I haven't learned the Reilly method yet, I have some suggestions. First off, you're correct in saying the front view is good. I personally struggle with the front view / symmetry, so hats off to you. I would only add that the chin of the last picture looks a little big, as well as being off center.
Next, about the 3/4th view. I noticed two problems, which I show visually with the attached picture. First, I've noticed that the "chin and jawline's direction" doesn't match with the "side of the head's direction". The top head shows if I followed the "side of the head's direction", and the bottom shows the jawline's direction. It's helpful to remember that the angle of the nostrils and the angle of the chin converge to the same point.
My other critique is about the eyes. When foreshortening, the center of the plane shifts, as illustrated with the diagrams on the left. Not only that, but since each side of the center line is the same size in front view, when foreshortened, the smaller side has less space to put the same amount of stuff. So in this case, the left (her right) eye would be smaller in comparison to the other and closer to the center line.
Actually, if you look at the nose you drew, you did it! We know that the nostrils are the same size, yet in your drawing, the left nostril is smaller! If you apply that same concept to the eyes and mouth, you should have a convincing face!
Thank you for taking the time to help! I think I’ll practice some boxes in perspective and then draw heads inside of them to work on what you mentioned
