Pear - 2 attempts

@narrowmargin
Looking for some feedback on my first couple of attempts at pear drawing. The first one I used an H pencil by mistake and it felt hard to get darker shades, so I tried again using a 2B. I'm fairly new to drawing and even the basic putting shading on paper ends up feeling like a lot of scratchy lines. I think I'm being impatient and going too fast. And also I have trouble identifying different levels of shading in the photo. Very dark, not so dark and very light I can kind of get, but differentienting within that was giving me trouble.

Nice job on these. I am seeing most of the beginners making the same mistake when doing this exercise, and that is that they are not squinting at the reference. The reason we do that is because it will condense all the lights together and darks together, making it easier to determine what is shadow and what is light. I did a quick process sketch for someone else, but I think you could benefit from it too. I hope it helps :)

Great stuff! I would definitely agree that spending perhaps an hour or two on one drawing would have a great improvement. That's something that I've heard Steven Zapata recommend because doing a longer drawing even at the beginning stages of learning can have great results! Which will increase your urge to do the next drawing and so on.
