Hey Andy,, Nice idea for a painting. The problem is the background is fighting for attention with the subject of the painting. It has too much saturated color, contrast, and leading lines sending our eyes out of the painting. I did a quick adjustment to your painting to show you what I mean. Also, add a little color from the objects to the background in the form of reflected light, this integrates the objects with the background better. I hope this helps :)
