Concept sketch

On average, how many concept sketches do you typically do before you move to the final work of art? For a finished stone sculpture I’ll typically do around 3 sketches then a small maquette in clay, then transfer that maquette to the final piece of stone.
Usually until I feel like its resolved enough where I can move on. Very cool to see a traditional sculpting process. You ever cast anything in bronze?

The amount of concept sketches I do really depends on the complexity of the piece and whether I'm satisfied enough with my concept sketches to be confident enough to begin. In my lesson How to Draw and Shade the Human Torso I did 4 studies. First a quick proportion study to get familiar with the measurements, then a gesture sketch, a value study and then an anatomy tracing. All of these were VERY useful to me especially because each has a specific focus. And I'm sure the final drawing would have been weaker if I didn't spend the time to study and prepare with these studies.
The thumbnail below crops out 2 of the studies. Click to see all 4...
